Aperture vs zoom
2

For those curious about aperture change while zooming:

  • f/5.0 - 100mm
  • f/5.6 - 140mm
  • f/6.0 - 210mm
  • f/6.3 - 330mm

So this is another big drawback compared to PanaLeica 100-400, which if I remember correctly is still f/5.6 at 300mm. So Panasonic starts 2/3 of a stop faster at the wide end and is still 1/3 of a stop faster near 300mm mark.

Re: Aperture vs zoom

forgive me asking in you thread, has anyone spotted a difference in IQ / noise using different software to process raw images?

I'm seeing a lot of noise in OOF areas via LRCC even with ISO 200 yet the same images appear clean in ON-1 RAW 2020

I wonder if they need to update LRCC? (or I may be losing my marbles again)

Isn't it because Lightroom applies excessive sharpening by default? Sharpening noise seems to be the default behavior (I'm assuming Bridge uses similar defaults).

Olympus Workspace gives the best results for me. Considerably less noise and more detail at the same time.

I've turned sharpening off in LR, now that I'm using the Topaz DeNoise AI plugin.

But before I started to use Topaz, I'd reduced the default sharpening in LR from 40 to 25.  I found 40 worked quite well with my Canons, but the Olympus doesn't have an AA filter so needs less input sharpening.

YMMV.

Re: Aperture vs zoom

one quick improvement by removing the adobe presets and using camera presets as default start point in preferences

Video IS test

A short demonstration of how the combination of IBIS, Digital IS and OIS works for video: https://vimeo.com/453068326/381972e606

Handheld while kneeling, 200 to 400mm. So far my conclusion is that enabling OIS only makes sense if you want to keep the scene static, as it will fight against any panning you attempt, resulting in jerky motion (also seen in one of the clips, despite the panning being slow)

I'll do a more methodical comparison one day, but probably no sooner than next weekend.

I haven't yet met a camera or lens that did not require some form of "learning curve". So in that regard I'm optimistic. Looking forward to a little more learning.

sometimes the problem seems to be that we have trouble learning that
