The lens that makes me say wow for the price is the AF-P 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens for under $50. It is great on my D3300 and D7500.

If money no object, then I loved the Nikon 800mm f/5.6E FL lens. Possibly the most fun I ever had when I owned that lens for a few months with a D500.

At the lower end, the 70-300 AFP DX  VR is really sharp for the price. AF is very fast, and silent. It's an incredible bargain.

My sharpest lens was the Sigma 50-150 2.8 OS HSM. Razor sharp, and built like a tank.
I sold it because it was very big and heavy, and I didn't use it very often.

I agree, Andre.

AF is quite fast,  at 300mm...allowing me to take shots of Dragonflies in flight:

I only a few lenses, and the 70 to 300mm AF-P might be my sharpest

I'm sure the 16-80 is a great lens. I have the 16-85 on my 14mp D3100, and that too is a very satisfying lens to use.

I'm waiting for Nikon to produce the equivalent on my Z50. The 16-50 kit lens is better than it's any right to be, but extra reach would be useful.

ever watch christopher frost's channel? I am FLOORED by how amazingly sharp the Z DX kit lenses are. It's absolutely incredible. I think Nikon only has those two lenses for Z DX currently, everything else is full frame and expensive. His review of the Z 50 1.8/S also is just magical how sharp these new Z lenses are.

It's funny, because I would be all over an affordable 16-50 dx lens. Maybe Nikon will eventually get out a 15-70 or something as an all in one for mirrorless.

I use the Nikon 16-80 DX lens and I really like it. Sharp and plenty good enough with its f2.8-40.

Re: Lenses that make you go WOW

Back in the 70's, I had the AI version of the 105/2.5, the 50/1.4, and a Nikon FE. A pretty amazing rig coming from my grandma's 127, and a Soviet SLR with 1/500 shutter.

The 18-140 VR is nice, and can be had used for $150 or so.

Wow! Impressive. I think the D7500 excellent AF system also contributes to the result!

Those lenses are OK - and I've got two of them. Not particularly WOW to my eye.

okay, noted.

Perhaps, these lenses have "the look" that I am looking for. Or I love the way they render the images.

It is a pretty subjective topic as to the "wow" people are looking. Some love the corner to corner sharpness, some love the the 3D/micro-contrast, and many more.

Indeed. Not quite as good as the D500. But really good to me

The AF-P lenses seem faster to AF ( newer stepping motor) than all previous AF-S lenses.

Good combo, IMHO.

I don't really go "wow" when I see an exotic lens produce the results we paid for. For instance, I had the opportunity to use a 200mm f/2.0 a few years ago. Yes, it was incredible. But, for that design and that price tag, it did exactly what I expected.

Lenses that performed beyond my expectation:

Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM. Tiny, and great IQ even wide open. Used it with the equally tiny SL1 in places where a larger camera would have been obtrusive. I shoot Nikon now, and miss this lens.

Nikon 85mm f/1.8 AF-s. Super-shallow DOF, instant AF, and extreme IQ stopped down to 2.8. Not unreasonably long FL, even on a crop-sensor body.

AF-S 85mm f1.8G is a great lens but CA is kinda bad wide open.
