EOS M5 officially discontinued
2

Canon’s Japan website has quietly moved the M5 to the “discontinued” section. RIP.

Hopefully this is a sign that M5 mark II is coming, not that they will no longer produce a SLR-format midrange M body.

according to the email i get from Canon UK some time back the M6mkii replaced the M6 and the M5....

A 32MP M5mkii with AF as good or better than the M6mkii and more external controls would probably make the RP look less attractive

if you want a VF in a M we will have to wait for the M50mkii

the M5 is still listed on Canon UK

DPreview (this website) published the following:  They said that Canon told them that the M6 II effectively "replaces both the M5 and the M6".  So there's not going to be an M5 Mk II.
.
The M5 is retired but it was getting a little long in the tooth by now.  The M6 is likely to be retired as well (if it hasn't already).   The M50 will be next and we can only assume that a more relevant model will be released before the end of the year as suggested.  Otherwise March 2021 will be the next likely time-slot for a new model.  I have always suggested that the technology in the R series cameras will eventually trickle down into the M series.  But features like IBIS will be heavier and cause the cameras to become thicker in the body.  It is also possible that Canon will retain their IBIS only in the R-series bodies for the time being, to get more people to consider switching. That is simply speculation though and I feel confident that eventually IBIS will move to the APS-C bodies.  But it makes sense for Canon to hold back temporarily while they iron out any bugs in the R5/R6 models first - especially since this is 'new' technology they are applying.

You can call it whatever you want, if it comes with an EVF, IBIS, and newer AF (closer to R5/R6) I'm getting it to replace my M5.

The only other thing that would make it my dream camera is focus bracketing, but considering they gave it to the R5 but not the R6 I'm not holding my breath.

the RP has focus bracketing ..the only  body that don't is the R

At least in Japan (BCN), the M6 II hasn't been selling well, so perhaps they will change their mind. It's the only mirrorless camera in its price range that doesn't have a built-in viewfinder, and I suspect that that has hurt sales. They could also release an updated M5 type camera under a different model name.

The M50 has been selling well, so it's a safe bet that that model will eventually be updated.

There will be another body with build in viewfinder and that 32Mp sensor one day. The question is: how long do we have to wait? I think it will be there within one year.

Actually i don't care about the internal viewfinder anymore since i have my R for low light work with speedlites.

IBIS is the most important thing. A new body should have IBIS, otherwise I'm not interested.  And to be honest, i really doubt M will get IBIS anytime soon. Don't be surprised if it won't be there until the M6mkIII, and Canon might even skip it for that one.

Hmm. The main situation in which I missed the internal viewfinder with the finder-less EOS M2 the most was not low light, but under bright sunlight that washes out the image on an uncovered LCD.

That said, I’m also wondering whether my next M should be the rumored high-end M, or the inevitable M300 with the 32MP sensor. As much as I like having the viewfinder on my M5, I want my M system to remain small (I can use the R in situations where small is not important), and the rumored M doesn’t sound small at all.

Well it won't be the first camera I've owned that was eventually discontinued. And I doubt I will replace either of my 2 M5 bodies. For me they fill a niche, relatively small and lightweight cameras that produce nice images and are easy to use.  I owned the original M and later an M3 but I sold them when I moved to the M5. My old eyes just can't deal with cameras without some kind of viewfinder and I prefer the fixed one of the M5 to the removable EVF on other models. I don't shoot much video which seems to be an improved feature on many newer M series cameras and for me the differences in image quality on newer bodies just isn't worth the cost to upgrade for me.  So I will stick with the M5. I also own the EOS R and a 7D MKII and am considering selling both of those in favor of the R6.

Best looking M camera. Hopefully the design makes a comeback in another form or mount.

Huh, I wonder if that's something that was added later, I remembered seeing things about the R6 not having bracketing:

"How about focus-bracketing? Do either of the new cameras support focus bracketing? (Video Time Code – 27:43)

The EOS R5 supports focus bracketing but the R6 does not."

The M6II has it, so I would think the next M would have it as well.

The external viewfinder solves that problem good enough i think

It's just a rumor. I think Canon will keep M small. Most customers forget to think about equivalent apertures and such anyway. As long as they maintain that artificial size restriction for M lenses they won't come up with a bigger body all of a sudden.

The most important feature of the M5 was the layout. No other Canon camera ever had so many control wheels. The later M50 and M6II are a terrible fallback against the M5.

The tragedy of the M5: Canon designed a perfect small mirrorless camera with a great handling, but forgot about the sensor read out speed and processor power. The designers simply didn't had the required horse power available to make it work like it should. You could argue the M5 came too early. And now the right sensor and processor are available Canon is refusing thus far to throw it in a nice M5 style body with the superior lay out.

It's sad.

The M6 had the same number of control wheels (5) as the M5.

The M50 maybe (depends on how you are looking at it.) The M6II definitely not a fallback. Everything operational with only one hand as opposed to the M5. A much better layout on the M6II. Also the focus button on the back and the MF/AF switch are gold.

IMO. The best looking M camera was the M3. (Followed by M6/M6II)

The M6II is not bad but the exposure control wheel is missing. It is one of my most used controls.
