Does Sony FE 24mm 1.4 GM work on a NEX 5n?

Just wonder if there is a compatibility issue with my setup.  Is anyone using this lens on an APS-C body?  Thanks, Bill

I looked for your response on the lens forum and couldn't find it. Mind giving a link?

The response was that the focus problems are remedied by updating the lens firmware to version 02

That’s not the case.  That lens and the NEX 5-N are incompatible for AF.  Updating the firmware solves aperture ring problems but not the AF focus issue.  Sony has a good page on camera and lens compatibility.

That is not what Sony has posted and would seem unlikely in any case. The 5n, you reported, is incapable of updating the firmware. Updating the firmware does not help with the aperture ring problems, which are a real incompatibility. However, if you manage to update the lens firmware, you will discover that the AF problems disappear, as I did.

Here are the compatibility issues from Sony's website:

"

  • "The SteadyShot is not supported.
  • Focus hold button of the lens does not work.
  • When Iris ring is switched between auto iris mode and manual iris mode, on-screen display (LCD monitor /Viewfinder) may flicker for a brief second and focus position may be reset.
  • When the Iris ring is set to manual iris mode, the Lens Model and Max Aperture Value of the Exif are not recorded correctly.
  • When the Iris ring is set to manual iris mode, the aperture value is set at the value which Iris ring indicates regardless of exposure mode.
  • When Iris ring is switched between auto iris mode and manual iris mode during movie recording, the recording will be stopped.
  • If you rotate the Iris ring, the time before Power Save is not extended.
  • When the Iris ring is set to manual mode, Background Defocus Control in Photo Creativity does not work correctly however the on-screen display is shown as is conventionally done.
  • The Exif lens name does not include "GM."

Note that there is no mention of AF incompatibility, other than that the focus hold button does not work.
