Just picked up the RP, will the EF 24-105 be all right or should I pay nearly triple for the RF?

Hi everyone. I just picked up the RP (still on way from Canon) to replace my 80D since I wanted an "in" into the FF world. Anyways, I am on a budget, but I can get the 24-105 EF L lens (first version since I don't do any videography) for around 400€. I could also get the RF version for 1,100€. That's considerably more. I know from reviews that the RF version is faster and sharper by a bit, but since it's already a big step up from what I currently have... should I stick with the adapter + 24-105 EF version and save 700€ for more glass down the line, or should I just save up now and get the RF version? Is the EF + adapter going to be so darn awkward on the RP?

Thanks.

You could always try somewhere like e-infinity and get the RF lens for considerably less than €1100;

Will the RF be better, yes. However, especially when you’re on a budget the question of it is worth spending that much extra for a potentially difficult to perceive quality difference is a different question entirely. Unless you’re really trying it will probably be hard to pick a difference between images shot with either lens, I certainly wouldn’t feel guilty for taking the old lens over the new one if you get a good price on it.

Consider the adapter is $200, I'd just skip the adapter and get the RF 24-105.

My RP comes with the EF adapter. I also got an extra 150€ off of the RP due to a sale Canon is having.

Awesome, thanks for the link. 750€. I'd rather get the RF version for that price! Thanks a bunch! I tried eBay, Wallapop, and even google shopping but this store didn't even show up. Thanks again for the link, mate!

I would add the RF 24-105 4-7.1. This lens is just made for the RP. Light and handles beautifully. The faster f4 L version is better (i have that also), mostly at the wide end but the 7.1 is very good at the long end (I was very surprised at how good it is at mid to long FLs) and it's not terrible at the wide end.

Don't be scared of the f7.1 as it is actually faster than a f5.6 APSC lens on your 80D and the RP has very good high ISO. If wanting a low light lens the RF 35 1.8 makes a good compliment and like the 24-105 is small/light and handles well on the RP.

I handled an RP with the EF 24-105 STM and adapter and didn't like it. Long and the weight being further out just didn't handle well. The older L version is even heavier so it would only be worse. IQ wise the RF L lens is definitely a step up from the older L version. The slower RF version is probably just a bit behind the old EF L version at the wide end (but the L has mustaches distortion at 24mm) and of course is slower at the long end.

The only real downside of the 24-105 4-7.1 is that if you like to shoot wide a lot and also make very large prints it might not be the best choice. Otherwise it's a great all around lens for an RP. Price is very reasonable also.

I'll add that the 24-105 L version is a superb lens, but it is a bit big for an RP and for most of the FL range there really isn't much IQ difference between it and the slower RF version.  IQ wise you can't go wrong with this lens, but make sure you want to carry it around with you as it is considerably heavier than the slower one and for me at least messes up the otherwise great handling of the RP.  It is much better suited for the R or R5/6 bodies.  I use mine on an R and it handles well but the camera/lens combo is much heavier than the the RP with the slower lens.

I have the RF version on its way will be selling my EF 24-105 locally.  I have the control ring adapter on its way from Korea it seems as I there are certain lenses I won't part with, mainly my 28-300L.

Relatively...actually very cheap it seems...is the 24-240 that I picked up just for a track shoot yesterday...  Did the job.

I think the RF is improved enough to be worth it. I would add to that: This is a walk around focal range. Hence it might be worth it to get rid of the adapter.

I would be aware that e-infinity is selling grey imports which won't have Canon's warranty. That isn't necessarily a bad thing (I'm in the UK and buy most of my equipment from the grey market) but it's something to bear in mind.

If you can find a place to get the RF version used, I would try that.  There are lots of great hardly used copies of it out there because it’s a kit lens.  I have found it to be a lot better than the EF lens.  It’s sharper, focusing and IS are both quieter, and it has the control ring as well and has way less zoom creep.

Re: Just picked up the RP, will the EF 24-105 be all right or should I pay nearly triple for the RF?

In Germany, if you buy the RP and within 30 days or so you also buy the RF 24-105 f4 from an official European dealer, then you will get 200,- Euros cash-back

https://www.canon.de/lens-promo/

a couple of months ago, I bought the RP with adapter from amazon.de for 1100,- Euros minus 100,-Euros instant cash-back. At that time, the RF was around 1130,-Euros at amazon.de but I found the lens on Amazon in Spain for 1000,- Euros. Then applied for the cash-back and at the end the RP with adapter and the RF 24-100 f4 cost me 1800,- Euros.

Good insight here except that 24-105 f4 L is not too big for RP especially with extension grip - nice combo

I'll have to check out the grip. I got the RP yesterday and I was playing around with it a bunch. My only FF lenses that I currently have are the 40mm and the 50mm stm lenses. I purchased the 24-105 L lens and it should arrive next week (extremely excited, my first L lens!!!!).

Nice!! That's actually still active (I just changed the .de to .es) and it is still working. Still though, I saved more money from the grey market purchase. When I purchased the RP I got 150€ off from Canon, but even with the discount from Canon the lens is still several hundred more than the one linked from e-infinity. Hopefully everything will be fine though! If not, I can always return it and purchase another one (I have 30 days to do so).

I went through this last year as I had a trip over to Germany to visit my son.  I have a 5DMk III with the L version which pretty much stays on the camera.  When I bought the RP before my trip last year I also bit the bullet and bought the RF 24-105.  I still use a DSLR and have not bought fully into Mirrorless yet as you seem to be.  If you are committed to Mirrorless I would say bite the bullet now and get the RF as you will probably do it later anyways.

One of the smartest decisions you will ever make. The RF 24-105 is insanely good.

I faced the same dilemma and went with the adapter.  I have no regrets.  I couldn't afford to replace this lens, but replacing my 100-400 was really impossible.

I know that this particular lens is not the sharpest lens that Canon has ever released, but it's perfectly serviceable with a slight bit of sharpening applied in LR.  Recently purchased Topaz Labs DeNoise AI, which not only removes noise but slightly sharpens the image as well.  Absolutely brilliant results.

I'm confident that I made the right decision, but will probably replace my lenses right after I win a major lottery.

I just checked the link: GBP 979 (€ 1166). Out of stock and depending on your location you will have to pay VAT and/or import duties (I think, the UK is not an EU member anymore).
Apart from that, the lens seems to be out of stock everywhere. In the Netherlands the price was recently raised from € 1200 to € 1474. No big deal since I am not able to buy one for 14 months or so.

I had the same dilemma.  I decided to keep the EF 24-105L and the plus adapter.  I didn't want to spend money for another L lens with the same focal length plus what am I going to do with the old 24-105L?  I have a few collection of the L lenses and to replace them would be cost prohibited.  Another plus is that the EF/RF adapter can utilize EF-S lenses also further expanding the capability of the RP.  Surprisingly the L lenses are sharper on the RP than the 5DII and 70D.
