EF lenses on Fuji - will I hate it?

Hello everyone,

I've been thinking of getting an X-mount Fuji, formerly having owned an S5 Pro and a fun little X10.  I primarily shoot Canon and have a nice selection of EF lenses, which I will be keeping.  Having searched these forums and various reviews, the consensus seems to be that the Fringer adapter is the way to go, so that is on my purchase list.  My question is, will I be sorely disappointed in the *continuous* AF ability for things that move (for both stills and video), coming from Canon DSLRs?  As best I can tell I'd be very happy with single point AF using the adapter, but I don't want to be too frustrated by the continuous AF experience when shooting sports, for example. As an FYI in case it helps, when shooting action, I don't tend to use tracking, but rather prefer to keep a single AF point on top of my target.  Will I have to get something like the X-T3 minimum to be happy?  Is the performance with adapted lenses comparable to an entry-level Canon DSLR, or can I expect more?  Any advice is very much appreciated, the more pragmatic the better.

-Ryan-Michael.

If you use a Fringer adapter performance with an X-T3 and good EF glass will match that of a high end Canon body.  I shoot birds in flight and the setup works wonderfuly.

Thanks for this, it is exactly the find of feedback I was looking for, if it can handle BIF well, that will work for me.  Much appreciated!

I use the Fringer Pro with X-T2's, and I would agree, going to an X-T3 or 4 would be a good idea if AF, especially AF-C, is important to you. For me, it's not so much of an issue and I am very happy with AF-S.

FWIW I think the Pro version is a better match for the Fuji X-T bodies as the aperture ring is more in keeping with the 'manual' dials on the bodies.

I find the Canon lenses work *great* with the Fringer adapter.

Make sure to turn off camera when changing lenses and securely seat lens.

Canon make cameras that work well on EF lenses.  Are you sure your direction of travel make sense?

Thanks for the recommendation!  I had debated getting an X-H1 for the larger grip and IBIS, but AF is more important to me, so I appreciate the feedback!

I am quite sure, I have Canon cameras that work swimmingly well with EF lenses that I will continue to use.  But this does not change the fact that I wanted to know about AF performance on Fuji cameras - never hurts to explore all options.

Just watch out as you stop down AF performance decreases due to the lack of light

If you need top notch AF-C tracking then yes you should consider the X-T3 or the X-T4, other than that the X-H1is near perfect. If you were interested in the X-H2, maybe consider waiting a few months, as the X-H2 is around the corner (to be announced within the first quarter of 2021), unless you absolutely want/need to switch now. And even if the X-H2 won't suit you, the X-T4's price will have dropped by then + maybe some of the winter deals will still be on.

You shouldn't have any problems at all. I can only speak to X-e3, X-T30, and X-T4 but Canon 400/5.6 and now Canon 400DOii work fine together via Fringer Pro. The Canon 100-400ii as well but I sold that lens preferring the Fuji 100-400 (I had the Canon, Tamron, and Fuji 100-400s all at the same time to compare before selling off).

Like Morris said, make sure the lens is seated well. I had 'lock up' today with X-T4 and 400DOii via Fringer Pro and had to turn off the camera, remove, then reattach the lens...then all was good.

Morris

I use a bunch. At best, they focus as fast as Fuji lenses, but hunt a bit more. But the same lens on the Canon is better in every respect including focus speed. The Fuji system AF is quite a bit behind its competitors, so that may be why the discrepancy, but it is big between EF lenses on EF cameras and FX cameras.

And we now have the Metabones EF-X smart adapter which has better "official" support for non-Canon brand lenses. Too soon to tell how it compares as for now (2020-08) it's only available directly from Metabones so there's little experience. Their adapters are solidly constructed with fast updates when problems are discovered. It supports a range of Tamron lenses not supported by Fringer.

Hey, I was looking for something like this. I tried shooting with a used 400mm f/5.6L but wassn't at all happy. Found too much focus hunting in AF-C mode . Bad copy?? Can you tell me the settings.I use those provied by Morris. Presently using the tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2 with the Fringer ii standard edition on my X-T30. I have only 1 body with me as of now.. X-T30

Some settings-

  • 400.0 mm
  • 1/2000
  • ISO160

Zone mode. 15 FPS.

Sorry that's all I can remember.

I've never heard of a bad copy with the Canon 400/5.6.

I'd reckon the difference is between the XT4 and XT30.
