Maxxum 650si Won’t Turn On

I’m not sure if this forum is strictly digital Minoltas but please forgive me if I’m posting this in the wrong place.

I inherited a Minolta Maxxum 650si Date(what a mouthful) that doesn’t want to turn on. I purchased a new 2CR5 battery and it still doesn’t work. I actually brought it to my local store today and they threw another battery in and that also did nothing. The contacts look very clean and we tried bending the ends a bit in case they weren’t making good contact. No dice.

The camera belonged to my grandma and had two lenses and a flash that I’d really love to try using. I swear it worked about a year ago when it was given to me. I vaguely remember testing it and then packing it away.

Any suggestions? There is a local shop that can probably service it but I know it’s not worth enough money to really justify a $100 repair.

This sometimes comes up .

On the assumption the camera isn't faulty , it's sometimes the battery it doesn't like .

Are you putting it directly in the camera or do you have a vertical grip fitted ?

Have you cleaned the contacts in the battery chamber ?

Use the end of a pencil with an eraser on .

Where this issues come up before it's turned out that the battery was the problem .

Although new the camera wouldn't come to life .

Try a different brands battery and see how that goes . What brand were you using ?

.

If the camera does turn out to be faulty , you can buy these cameras for about $30 , so a replacement is the usual remedy .

Re: Maxxum 650si Won’t Turn On

Joseph, I agree with Neil's advice.

I am currently finishing up a roll in my 650si Date. I am using a Panasonic 2CR5 battery and everything works great.

I realize the sentimental value of you camera. Sometimes these things just happen. These old Maxxum bodies are getting old and sometimes get flaky. I don't know where you are located but here in the US a used body will cost average $35 for either the 600si or 650si, but expect that to go up. For instance, I bought mine for $17 and it included a Minolta 35-80mm F4-5.6 "Lens Cap" lens. That was a year and a half ago. And this body is a very well featured one as you probably know. It is actually my favorite, along with the Maxxum 70.

Good luck in your efforts, let us know the outcome.
