Tough lenses
6

Came home very tired a few days ago, walked into house with arms overloaded and lazily had Panasonic 14-140II lose in hand.

Dropped said lens from chest height onto Concrete floor covered with thin lino/vinyl.

Was horrified and cursing my stupidity and laziness (through being tired).  Dreading the worst i didn't even attempt to pick it up for an hour. I just couldn't face it. Elements and stabilisation guff was bound to be wrecked. I was so angry with myself.

Finally I picked it up and it rattled a bit (maybe it always did?), fitted it to camera - working beautifully!

Gave it a thorough test day out yesterday, it's performing faultlessly.

Thank you Panasonic. x x x.

Re: Tough lenses

I had a similar experience with my 7-14 mm.  It slipped out of my shoulder bag and landed on hard-packed earth.  Like you, I was filled with dread and trepidation.   But it passed the shake test and has since worked faultlessly.   The pro lenses are beautifully made.   They have a pleasing heft and seem very solid. 👍

Re: Tough lenses

i wasn't so lucky Adrian.  Fell off bike in Prague.  Shattered the CPL filter and thot it was OK.  No problems w/ GX8, but it became evident that the 14-140 was de-centered slightly and AF was unreliable.  It ended up in a Czech trash can )-;

Keep it fun!

Re: Tough lenses

Being relatively light probably helps the 14-140's chances... I've yet to drop a lens but I did take a spill with an old GF6 unto muddy rock (exploring a cave), it flew out of my hand at I first slipped and then I grabbed it mid-air only to smash it into the floor as I fell (with the mounted 20/1.7 pointing up apparently, since it didn't even get a speck of dirt on it). Tilt screen was out, so was the flash, the top plate was caked in mud, I thought it was a goner too and waited until we were out of the area to clean it up...

Surprisingly it was no worse for wear, not even a scratch on it! Took a while to clean the mud out of the display hinges and edges but even the mics seemed to work fine after that. Pana build quality has always been somewhat underrated IMO, the top plate on that GF6 is really plastic and it only features metal around the front/bottom IIRC, we've never seen a rash of QC issues from Pana the likes of what Oly has experienced at different times tho. Shoot, apparently my very plastic GX850 has a stronger tripod mount than my E-M5 III. 🤷🏻‍♂️
