This is not correct. They do NOT work exactly the same way. The wireless charging uses electromagnetic induction that with a time-varying magnetic field induces a current in a closed loop of wire. So, instead of direct charging we have two more steps involved in this process: one is transforming electricity in electromagnetic field, and then another reversing that field to electricity. Because there is no ideal conversion, the dissipation (loss of energy) is manifested as a heat. Eventual incorrect charging from the phone system + heat from the wireless charger are the reason for overheating the battery. That is exactly what I have experienced with my Samsung phone replacing 3 batteries in 4 years. Now I am using wired charger and I don't have any overcharging problems. Now the phone and battery are not even worm after full charge.

Re: wireless chargers

While it is true the there is an extra heat-generating step involved with wireless charging, once you have the power inside the phone (whether from a direct wired connection or through a coil converting an electric field), it still ends up in a wire connection to the battery, so the actual charging of the battery is the same. The extra heat from the coil is minor compared to the heat that is generated by the actual charging of the battery.

My wife and I both have Samsung phones, and both mostly use wireless chargers (the overnight ones are Samsung, and the ones we use during the day are third party).  I did not have any issue with the battery on my Note 8 (just sent back to Samsung for the credit towards my new phone) - using it for three years. My wife has not has any battery problems with her S8, over about 2.5 years. I have not heard of others having battery problems with wireless chargers - except sometimes they don't charge very well.

My watch and my ear buds can only be charged wirelessly.
