R5 and 600 f11 Moon shot
3

Canon R5, 600mm, f11, ISO 320, SS 1/200, using sensor crop of 1.6x, handheld.

Cropped, slight editing in Lightroom (haze, clarity, sharpening, increased whites and shadows, no noise reduction). This would likely have been sharper had I used a tripod. The metadata on the image, shutter speed 10,000 is incorrect. it was 1/200.

What is the final size you kept? 1.6 crop is 17mp and you cropped again?

3211 x 2141. Mostly so as not to waste pixels in posting to DPR.

Here's the original, no editing or cropping in its original (1.6x. cropped) 17MP size.

Re: R5 and 600 f11 Moon shot

Thanks!

Well, 6mp is what I had with my 300D a long time ago hehe.

I had the idea to get the 600mm with crop mode to shot sunsets. F11 should not be an issue about iso (you had 320 iso here, very good).

Something happened because your original looks cleaner when viewed at the same size.

If you have photoshop try upscaling using the "preserve details" mode and double the size exactly. Then try cropping and see if you get better results. I use that trick a lot with great success. Let me know if it helps.

I used to do that a lot when I first got my R and used APS-C lenses this helped a lot with the crop. I could print 16 x 20 inch prints and they looked razor sharp. It fills in the "jaggies".

Very nice, the moon is tricky because of the Atmosphere

It is hard to do a lot better unless the weather and atmosphere are just right.

Nice shot.   Any other feedback on the 600mm?  I’m actually looking at this lens but having found any usable real world feedback on its performance.  TIA

Re: R5 and 600 f11 Moon shot

Here's the RF 800 shot on a Tripod. Stabilization off, cable release. Doubled the resolution and processed before cropping. I'd say that's about it with this lens on an EOS R unless I put an extender on it. Might try one more down the road at ISO 100. Should have done that but wasn't thinking.

Re: R5 and 600 f11 Moon shot

This is noticeably sharper than my shot, which was handheld, not using a tripod.

Re: R5 and 600 f11 Moon shot

I still think there’s more to be had. If If have just used the ISO 100......... also, waiting until the wee hours would help, but it will be a while before I can try now.

The R5 looked good for bird and animal eye af, but will keep my A7RIII+200-600mm+1.4tc.

600 f11 + R5, image upscaled 2x then cropped

Per Johnnycal's suggestion, here's my original shot, upscaled 2x in PS and then cropped.

Regarding the handling of the lens: it is light though awkwardly long. I did not find f11 a problem.

I find shooting a fixed lens at this distance a bit easier (though the moon makes it a non-problem) to become lost in space. I'd prefer to zoom out and then zoom in once I know what I'm focusing on.

Tried again today using high speed shooting of some planes near a local airport. If your first shot is in focus, the rest of the series will likely be, too. If your first shot is mis-focused, the whole series will be, too.

I find the view blackout disconcerting, particularly when following a moving object. Haven't done enough reading, yet, to understand under what conditions the viewfinder freezes the first frame vs. true, continuous live view. The hit rate was very high using continuous high speed shooting but fast moving objects were a challenge to keep in the desired portion of the frame.

the 600, at least for me, is "good enough" though hardly the last word in sharpness or detail. I'm quite interested in the 100-500 + 1.4x extender.

hate to say this but it seems mushy! here is a shot with canon 600mm f4.8 II with no TC on:
