GX7 question

On the GX7 is it possible to have the viewfinder be the EVF but have it switch to the rear screen when pressing menu or image review?

Yes using the EVF eye detection sensor facilitates this automatically

Thanks but I don't want the rear screen on all the time when my eye is not to the viewfinder. I only want the rear screen to activate when I hit the menu or image review. At the moment I have to manually toggle the rear screen to look at menus (too fiddly to see in the VF) or review images which is a minor irritation.

Use the evf/LCD key, switch into evf only mode.

Switch to LCD mode if you wish to.

But you shall lose a lot of feature controls, like Touch LCD etc. In fact LCD and evf together (by auto using eye sensor) would not spend much more energy in real life.

This is driving me to distraction.... as I'm sure I've owned, and perhaps do still own, a camera [presumably one with an EVF], that has a Set-up menu option to automatically direct Playback to the rear screen.

As I wrote the above, it dawned on me that this may have been dropped from models equipped with eye-detect auto-switching?

Or is it only offered on those, to stop the image disappearing into the EVF if editing etc...

Not sure, and having now checked all 320+ occurrences of "Playback" in the LX100 and LF1 manuals, I've given up!

Re: GX7 question

The GX7 has an option in the Setup menu for Auto Monitor Off, which might solve your problem. It should be worth a try.

Thanks Maggie - a possible solution. But I remember cameras like the G3, FZ200, LF1.... and really - really - like having the auto-switching feature.

Just wish I could recall which one it is that allows the option to fix Playback position, as that seemed the ideal solution.

In the hope of doing that, I've now searched through manuals for EVF cameras by Samsung, Sony, Olympus and Panasonic.... leaving my mind an utter blur!

Perhaps I dreamt the whole thing?

Peter

PS - Aren't Sony manuals awful! Not that any of the others are properly fit for purpose either, but I have to congratulate Samsung for this little gem....

"If the photo shot is taken when the direction of the
camera was aimed at the bottom, the direction of the
image can be different in the playback mode."

It should be GX1 (the oldest model I owned that I can traced...).

LVF2 + GX1: "Play On LCD=ON" in Custom Menu P.5/7 item 5, under Review, the playback image would be displayed on the LCD no matter we are in evf or LCD mode.

If we were shooting in evf mode, after reviewed the image on LCD as per above, touching of the shutter can cancel the review and return back to evf mode.

Since GX1 + LVF2 is on manual switching, the "Auto Review" (Setup Menu, P.2/5 item 4) will display the just taken picture either on evf or LCD depending on which one we are using at at that time. Therefore the Play on LCD is just related to normal playback.

As I wrote the above, it dawned on me that this may have been dropped from models equipped with eye-detect auto-switching?

You are correct. That "Play on LCD" option is no longer available on cameras having integrated evf (GX7, GX85 & G85). The Auto Review or manual Review will depend on which media we are using (auto switching...).

Or is it only offered on those, to stop the image disappearing into the EVF if editing etc...

Re: GX1?

I sold the GX1 some time ago, but it could well have been that!

Kept the LVF2, to use with my LX7 - and have that set so its Playback always starts on the rear screen, regardless of shooting choice, but can then be transferred to the VF by pressing the button there.... a rather awkward process that I doubt I've tried more than once!!!

So yes, that's definitely one instance in which I've encountered this option.... just felt I'd also seen it more recently, somewhere.

Who knows? I'm fairly sure that I don't!

Thanks, Albert.
