You kids with your new toys (Keeping my RP) ...
15

I'm keeping my RP and I'm happy about it!

*26 megapixels to use any way I see fit (more than the R6, mind you - and we all know more is better).

*I can shoot in crop at 10.1 megapixels, which is just as many as our Rebel XS had.  Plenty for 8 x 10's.

*When I'm going through vacation photo edits and comparing with our Rebel we brought along - no blown highlights for the RP but some unrecoverable with the Rebel. Plenty of dynamic range for my simple needs.

*Plenty of stabilization in the lenses.  When did everyone develop Parkinson's anyway?  A couple grand $$ more for IBIS or a couple hundred $$ for a tripod?

*Dual cards?  Whatever.  Cards are just an added cost.  What do I want to buy two for?  If we expect our cards to fail, we're clearly buying the wrong cards!

I don't need no fancy R5's or R6's or nothing.  Even if I had $4,000 laying around burning a hole in my pocket, I'd still keep my RP and probably feed my kids or something.  If Fro hooks me up in the Super Huger $5,000 camera giveaway - I'll probably get lenses for the RP and something in the M's for a second camera (not one body and a kit lens).

There.  I feel better.  Thought I'd post a final thread about the RP as everyone else moves on.    Any other RP owners feel free to sing it's praises in thread!

so when are you joining me in ordering an R5?

I have a RP too, hoping I can keep chugging along until the R5 refurb deals hit, if I can keep the temptation away for that long.

I love my RP. I would love to have 45 megapixels! I am the Bad Photographer afterall, the ability to crop in post would be great. Dual card slots, yes please, why not? I've had one card fail I was able  to recover the images, I lucked out, but it put the fear of card failure in me. IBIS? Absolutely? Again why not? The more stability the better. But back to the RP, I love it and will have it for at least another year.

Agree, no point Wasting money (if) you dont shoot 4/8K for a Living

If you don't shoot 4K/8K video, spending $2500/$3500 for R6/R5 seem rather meaningless. There are only (3) still improvements:

  • Animal Eye AF for birding is very useful
  • Faster FPS, as both EOS-R / RP are SLOW for action
  • IBIS

I tend to crop heavily shooting wild life, so a lower resolution 20mp is a no go for me. 26mp RP and 30mp EOS-R buy me more room (resolution insurance) to crop and isolate the bird. Sadly both older camera struggle in C-AF with poor FPS. So neither R/RP/R6 offer a compelling solution.

  • I can use a lower price $1499 Canon R7 with 32mp APS-C sensor from 90d/M6ii. Hopefully it'll come with IBIS and animal eye AF like the newly released Nikon Z5

Lastly even if you shoots video for a living, you can't use either R5/R6 reliably for wedding. Key moment when Bridie walking down an isles to her saying YES can take as long as an hour depending on the brides, the unforseen delays etc.., you can't afford to have camera overheats & shutdown @those critical moments. I'm not sure R5 / R6 fits anywhere. Overheating prevent them from being a reliable camcorder for the videographer, low res of R6 make a poor choice for photography, higher resolution 45mp R5 seem overprice comparing to a whopping 61mp Sony A7R4.

R5/R6 are fine cameras, but they're not the "Revolution" as quoted from canons hype machines.

anyone who shot weddings with a 5D4 will find the R5 a worthwhile update. full stop. they would have a counterpart who records video. I've rarely seen wedding photographers now go solo when video is required; I guess it could just be sample bias on my part, but would mean those solo shooters have been avoiding me like the plague.

looks like the R5 is a pretty match against the A7R4 all things considered.

anyone who is coming from a 6D or 5D3 will find the R6 a compelling upgrade, provided they're not leveraging ML firmware.

for those of us on the RP, need to see reviews if the new OLP on the R6 improves sharpness compared to the 26MP RP. Even then, I don't shoot birds that much, and when I do 400 pixels vertically and horizontally isn't big enough for me vs IBIS and much better DR.

For general photography, the EOS RP is generally good for someone who is looking to dive into a full-frame mirrorless system. Oh, wait Nikon will be releasing its Nikon Z5.

You can record all day long in 4K 30p (not HQ) or crop oversampled 4K 30p. I don't see what's wrong with this...

Re: You kids with your new toys (Keeping my RP) ...

I just bought my RP in June with the 24-105 F4-7.1 when it was on rebate. I am really enjoying it. I shoot portraits and  small events. So I generally do need super fast FPS and I don’t crop generally fill the frame

Re: You kids with your new toys (Keeping my RP) ...

I'm seriously thinking about picking up an RP to replace my 5DIII which is just too heavy to lug around all day.  The 5DIII is great for night photography on a tripod but with the 300 f4L IS + 2X converter it comes in at 2500 gm.  3 years ago I picked up an Olympus EM10II with the 75-300 Zoom that give the same final apparent field of view as my Canon rig but at only  850 gm.  I saved enough money from skipping my chiropractor appointments to pay for the Oly equipment.

But with an RP and the new 600mm f11, I can go full frame again with a system that weighs only 1400 gm.  That is still doable for all day work and the price is still reasonable.  I'm waiting to see how well the 600 and 800 mm f11 perform before pulling the trigger.  I'm also tired of buying disappointing glass.

That's the biggest problem of the R6 and R5. The R6 is relatively affordable, but to much of a downgrade for resolution. The R5 is too expensive for now.

I have some primes which i would love to have stabilized.

You do?

I really want that R5, but it's simply to expensive.  The AF seams to be awesome, no kidding.
