How you intend to use R5?

Hello, folks. From reading the forum and checking youtube for R5 reviews, most of it is related to video overheat. I wanted to check how people use cameras these days?

Hi Light Pilgrim,

Good post.

In 18 months with my R I've shot 10's of 1,000's of still images but less than 5 minutes of Movie footage. Movie mode is there if I ever need it, but I have little to zero interest in it.

When I watch camera reviews I just speed skip through the movie section (sorry Jordan!).

When I get an R5 it will be primarily for stills.

I appreciate others will have differing needs.

I am like you, but fully appreciate different needs of other people. Just wondering if this is indeed true that people mostly do video now as all discussions are about video overheat.

I believe the forum regulars (pre R5/ R6) shared a fairly similar level of interest to me about Movie Mode and 'film making' as there was little to no discussion about them (that I noted).

Things may change now, but I suspect the haters and trolls are picking up on any negatives.

Strangely, none of them have posted links to any examples of the movies they've made...

I'm not 'anti-film maker' by any means, but don't expect me to join in the movie chit chat.

Mostly birds and wildlife stills until winter...then I will add video to the mix too, but I don't be recording anything for 30 minutes or more. I will do short clips that last no more than a minute. I will use a second card for video as well.

Mainly stills + short (1-5 min) video clips

I'm mainly a stills guy currently shooting with the 7Dmk2, but do shoot some video-Clips of Family and wild-life now and then.

I love all the upgrades going from an ageing aps-c camera to the FF-world. That bird-AF seems amazing, in general the AF seems spectacular, high fps, much better DR, IBIS, timelapse-videos etc.

When I buy the R5 next spring or something I'm looking forward to only record 4K-video. The oversampled Crop-mode is really interesting since it gives more reach to the long teles, for stills as well. I'm planning to use the 4K HQ (oversampled 8K) and 4K120P, so when real reviews start showing up I'll be curious about the availability/thermal limits for those video-modes in every-day use.

I also think the 20 fps ES will be very useful for me shooting kids and bigger birds.

People get too hung up on what youtubers think / want but in fact they are really a minority. I hate the word "influencer" as anyone buying a camera and relying on what a youtuber things is in for big problems.

The fact is proper videographers / cinematographers are using gear that gets the job done in a professional environment like Canon C series or Arri / Red, these small format cameras will never replace that sort of equipment and they arnt meant to.

Youtubers are mostly (and i stress mostly, there are some really good professional artists on youtube) amateur vloggers trying to get clicks, their content is entertaining but not worth relying on for gear advise.

I shoot mainly stills but one thing that interested me in the R5 over my 5d4 was the 4k time lapse where the 5d only does 1080p plus all the other stills stuff like focus stacking and subject tracking

If you read internet and watch youtube, then you think that 99% of people use video only and for them R5 is a disaster because it overheat. When you talk to people, 99% of them to stills and overheating is not at all a problem. I think Canon knows their Target Audience for this camera.

Voted 99%, but in fact is rather closer to 100%. Could very well live without any video features at all.

Re: How you intend to use R5?

based on the results of this poll (and btw appreciate everyone participating), I think the video overheat issues could impact 1-3% of people. If folks solely do video, I think it is better to get a dedicated devise. I still think that Canon should address the issue if it is real and if it is as bad as people make it to be. I already hear about a possible recall or a delayed second batch due to the potential fix they need to make. We shall see.

I am wondering if the battery life could be addressed via a firmware. That is a real challenge, even for photographers.

Perhaps 65% stills and 35% video -- but voted 50/50.

This is camera I intend to use for many years.  No need to buy anything else since it does it all.

Studio portraiture,  weddings, travel (if that ever happens again). Stills mostly.

I'll test video to make sure it works.

I believe my 1Dx shoots video, never used it. I just picked up the R5 today and hear it shoots video. I probably won’t use it.

I did answer your survey also.

Actually, the lowly and maligned EOS R does full width 4K time lapse, only slightly cropped to 16:9 in height. Only 4K 30 is severely cropped.

See p.194 of the Advanced Use Guide.
