Good deal on this gx7? What can I sell the kit lens for?

I saw this pop up, these are Canadian dollars. I have the GF1, the gx7 looks to be a good upgrade to it but I already have the 14-42 lens in my collection...  any idea what I could sell this kit lens for? I think I'd have to ebay the lens because I'm not sure my community of 300k people has a lot of m43 users but who knows.

Check Ebay SOLD listings.

In the US, it seems to average between $75-95.

It's a terrible lens, though. By far the worst normal zoom that Panasonic has produced for M43.  The MK II version is supposed to be better, but that's not what's on that camera.

Good to know, thanks. I thought it might be hard to sell which is making me hesitate. I could get a body only Oly omd e-m10 (mark i) for 299 from the same place... might be better to get that one.

The lens shown in the photo has a 46mm filter thread, which would mean that it is the Mark II version.  That is an excellent lens for its low price. If you have an older Mark I version (52mm filter thread), it is definitely worth keeping this newer one.

Per DPR, the GX7 was "Announced Aug 1, 2013"... so it's rather hard to believe that this camera - seven years later - is either Open Box or an ex-Display model?

Nice camera, but not necessarily the right one to be buying - are London Drugs a sufficiently trustable business?

Can you perhaps phone them for an explanation of its history?

As SamKnopf says, this 46mm filter 14-42 lens is pretty good, much better than Panasonic's original 52mm 14-42 lens, which was a bit of a dog.

In fact, when I got the Mk II lens in a kit and compared it against my 14-45mm lens (about which many rave), I preferred the 14-42 and sold the 14-45.  IQ is comparable, and the new 14-42 is smoother to operate and the lens barrel barely extends at all when zooming.

If you got your existing 14-42 with your GF1, it is almost certainly the 52mm filter lens, so that is the one you would sell if you want to sell one.  But you probably wouldn't get much if anything for that, so it might be better to hang on to it and sell it with the GF1 if you ever want to sell that camera.

I had a GF1 and liked it, but the GX7, which I still own, is so much better in so many ways.

Say circa $300 usd. For another $200 USD at B&H you get a new GX85 with a 3 year warranty. The mighty little 12-32 and the 45-150 (not a bad little lens). Same evf but does not tilt like the GX7. No AA filter - and it shows. 5 vs 2-axis IBIS. Better AF. Better video. 4K, stills and video.
I got circa $100 USD each for the 12-32 and 45-150.
Another approach. Either way they are lovely in hand and make great street or travel cameras.

I was about to suggest the same thing, Best buy has a similar deal.

They are a long standing Canadian company so I don't have a concern as far as the company goes. I did ask the local store how these open box/demos work and they said the company will inventory the warehouses for returns (open box) or units that were sitting on a shelf or in a cabinet in an of their many stores across Canada and them sell them online. I wondered the same thing, how these sat on shelves for this long after the gx8 AND gx9 have come out. Guess they did just that, sat there! They have several previous model cameras on the olympus side too like the omd m10 m1 and m2.

AH! Yup, out of stock now. Guess that's that I'll probably just save up or wait until mly gf1 dies and then spring for a gx8 or 9 or whatever is the thing to get then. Sounds like the gx85 would be the thing to look out for.

I like the 5 axis IBIS, sounds like the gx85 would be really nice.

The best way I've found with possible bargains like this one is...

- to do have previously done sufficiently-thorough research

- to handle the product before purchasing, unless CERTAIN the seller allows no-quibble returns [a real regret with the GX80/85 I rushed into buying!]

- to know a reasonable price you're prepared / need to pay

But I've a friend who's happy to buy whatever takes his eye, and will sell stuff on that doesn't suit him...

Takes all sorts, to make a world?

The 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 Mark II IS / WAS the kit lens for the GX7. You could also opt for the 20mm f1.7 Mark II.

If the OP has the original, 14-42mm he should definitely swap.

I bought a 14-42mm mark II and sold it.

Mine came with the 20mm which is freaking AWESOME. I bought the 14-42 after used... no idea if I have m1 or m2, I'll have to check.

You might know it already, just in case...

GX1 --> GX7 --> GX85 --> GX9.

GX8 is a stand alone line of product, a premium model has higher spec than the other GXs, no successor yet.

FYI.

I did not know that actually, that the gx8 was it's own line. What a stupid naming convention!

Yes, indeed still a lot of confusion lately, e.g. the latest G100, not a successor to the G85/G95 but a new line of vlogging oriented entry class similar to GF9/10...

And while there is a complete succeeding line of Gs, the G1, G3... G7, G85, G95 etc which are used to be an economy line of the flagship GH, suddenly G9 is launched, being a flagship of still photo centric product. Now Panasonic is in a two horses driving system, GH5 becomes a video/hybride king of Panasonic ...

Back to the GX, I think it might not be an original intention of Panasonic to have a stand alone model (the GX8). I guessed Panasonic wished to rearrange its lines of product: kept GF (not GF1) be the entry class (as it is still now), G for a mid-range mini dslr form factor and GH on the top. Since GX7 (in terms of spec and capacity more advanced than GF, but below Gs) was quite success (it is still the love of many nowadays), Panasonic should wish to push the well received GX to higher price point (premium). Therefore GX8 was launched (Is it similar to G9 of today? Less video centric but had a higher spec than the G7 at that time?).

In Japan, the GXs are actually called GX7, GX7 mk-II (a.k.a. GX85), GX7 mk-III (a.k.a. GX95), and GX8.

Unfortunately, Panasonic overlooked that a 20Mp sensor (highest resolution at that time, even GH4 was 16Mp only), WR, improved IBIS, larger hand grip for improved ergonomic etc theoretically must have features for a premium class model, doesn't receive similarly warm market response as GX7. A high launching price was partial of the problem, the increased body size might also not be ideal for some rangefinder form factor users (a reason I skipped GX8). GX8 did not selling well until it cut its prices...

A lesson should have been learnt, Panasonic returned to the original smaller body design of the GX, and until now no GX8 successor. On spec-wise, the 2015 GX8 is still as powerful (except for the IBIS, old nosier m-shutter and new features developed over the years) as the latest GX9 of 2018...

To me, for similar money I shall pick a G95 for a few more $. For budget and size (if don't care for the 16Mp nor non WR), I would pick GX85 for its dirt cheaper price, or GX9 at a similar price of GX8. GX7 will only be considered if budget is everything.

For the OP: The GX7 is close to the size of the GF1, but it includes a built-in EVF. I don't know if you have the add-on EVF for the GF1, but it sucks. The improved add-on EVF for the GX1 was much better. The built-in EVF on the GX7, GX85, and GX9 (substantially the same on all three, all of which are close to the same size) is certainly better than the GF1's add-on, but some people experience tearing or other issues with it. I and I think most people are fine with it.

The GX8 is a bigger camera than all the ones mentioned above. When it came out, lots of folks hated the larger size. But compared to some of the newer, bigger dSLR-style cameras it certainly is not that large. One thing that the larger size enabled was a much larger, and much better EVF. If you are OK with a bigger camera than your GF1, you might keep an eye out for a used GX8.

Any one of these three (or the GX9, not pictured) would be a big upgrade from the GF1, IMO.
