Get the better lens 18 55.  I understand everyone says concentrate on your learning but

Performance helps keep enthusiasm high.

The 18 55 is reaallllllly good.  And can be almost the only lens you need for many pics as it is relatively fast, and very sharp.  While it is nice to have something wider than 18 and narrower than 55, this is a well thought out range.   As far as selling the other lens it is always good to have a second one just in case but funding may not allow.

I have the XC 16 50 and it is a well adequate lens as well but not compelling like the 18 55 in terms of performance.

I just received a 10 24 it is excellent as well, but the Tiffin 72mm Polarizer I bought with it is pretty soft.

So if you have any filters on a lens make sure you understand the difference with and without.

I wouldn't pay that much for an 18-55... you can get them used for much cheaper..

I got one for 220 shipped.

My 15-45 wasn't bad, but I didn't enjoy shooting with a plastic power zoom.

I did a comparison a while back, of just these lenses: https://bastibe.de/2019-05-11-fuji-zoom-lenses.html

Personally, I stuck with the 18-135, and sold the 15-45, 16-50, and 18-55. Yes, I owned them all, because I was as confused as the OP was, and decided to evaluate them all myself.

"To be perfectly honest, I can not see any significant differences between any of these pictures. At this point, I am starting to question the entire concept of sharpness and micro contrast for evaluating lenses. But at least I learned a lot about how to use the Gimp."

"As a sanity check, I repeated the experiment with my old Nikon 18-200, and this was in fact noticeably less sharp. And slightly overexposed. And slightly off-color. That's why I switched to Fuji. But as I said, this was a sanity check, not a fair comparison, as the Nikon D7000 body is much older than my Fuji X-E3, and the lens has surely seen better days as well."

Excellent comparison. Your summing up matches my own experience - modern camera gear IQ is converging with diminishing returns.

Dear All,

After seeing all your suggestions, I decided to stick with current XC 15-45 lens till I understand all the basics. I am using shutter priority mode mostly. I need to learn how to use proper settings in manual mode and utilize the light.

Thank you for your time and support.

I think that's the best decision you could have made. You stated that you liked the 15-45mm images, but had difficulty in getting good low light shots. That's indeed a sign you need to get comfortable with the basic photography and camera techniques first. Investing in another 'kit'lens won't really help you that much there.

Just keep learning about the different settings and modes the camera has the offer, you'll get the hang of it soon enough. And take the steps you want to make in your own order, we all have different preferences but you'll have to do what makes sense to you. So: wise choice!

The IQ of the 15-45mm XC is very good The ergonomy is above average the price is attracting

If you are ready to cope with ergonomy it is a good choice to save money for a future XF 55-200mm in complement

If you're using shutter priority, try slowing down your shutter speed to about 1/15th second in low light for anything that's not moving. The 15-45 has good OIS that will stabilize camera shake.

Unless budget is no concern, else I think just learn to use the camera and kit lens first before moving to something else

Try the XC 35 F2 for family shots to give you blurry backgrounds. Better at night too and should be sharper than the zoom at 35mm. At $200 it was made exactly for people in your situation.

Stick with what you've got.  At the mid to wide setting the 15-45 is optically excellent and if your images disappoint then it is almost certainly how you are using it.

Buy the new cheap 35/2, which will give you excellent optics at the long end and better light gatheting.

However if you are disappointed with your images it is unlikely to be the gear, especially as a beginer it is likely because you need to work more on the craft.

Re: XC 15-45 or XC 16-50 OR XF 18-55 on X-T20 for beginner ?

I own 16-50 and 18-55.

For 15-45 I always read good things about its IQ, but is with powered zoom - I do not like this.

I never compared IQ between my 16-50 and 18-55, but for my needs both are ok. I prefer and almost always use 16-50, because of the wide end and because of its small size. I use 18-55 only when need more light.

I can share lot of images with 16-50, and at 16mm I can tell IQ is better than 16-80 at 16mm.

Also I am sure 16-50 is much cheaper, I got it from UK (OIS vII) for about 170 Euro.

Regards!

I have the XC16-50 ll and after reading some good reviews of the XC15-45 I bought one.

Comparing the two I ended up returning the 15-45. Actually I liked it operationally but the IQ wasn`t quite up to my 16-50. The long end was not great at all. I understand it`s an issue with this lens.

That said, I`d be willing to try another sample given the opportunity ,but for now the 16-50 serves me well.

Update: Got me another xc15-45 pz recently that came with my XA5. This copy is really good , maybe even as good as my old xc16-50 oisll but hard to tell now that I no longer have the older lens. As we all know, kit lens quality often varies from one copy to another.

I own all 3 zooms, but use only the 15-45 because it is wider and smaller than either of the others. Excellent image quality for an inexpensive zoom -- especially at the wide end!

I didn't know it any way I will not get one more lens. 16-50 is good, some day I will try few 16-80 and if find sample with good 16mm I will get one.

I have kids and sometime I want my lens be up to 300mm

It's still a power zoom when you use the focus ring. You just get finer control over the zoom movement. This ability to zoom using the focus ring was added in a firmware update, but not all older Fuji bodies got it. I can't recall which cameras have this ability and which don't. I only know that it works on my XE3. It's useful, but not the same as the mechanical zoom on the 16-50.

Re: XC 15-45 or XC 16-50 OR XF 18-55 on X-T20 for beginner ?

Own both XC15-45 and XF18-55, both second hand.

On the wide side, the XC15-45 is by far sharper than the XF18-55 (at least for my copy). Anything wider than 28mm the XC15-45 is much sharper than XF18-55. The aspect that the 15mm gives you much more than the 18mm. Tele side, they perform pretty much the same, both just doing so-so. You need other lens if you want a visually sharp photo on 100%.

Personally prefer the color on XC15-45, but this is just personal.

The problem with XC15-45 is it's electronic zoom. Every time you power on the camera the lens need to zoom external. That's a 1-2 second lag and may cause a few miss-hit if you are using it for street photography or children / pets shots.

The 2/3 stop aperture difference isn't a big deal personally. If you care about boken or brightness it can be a point to consider, while the close-shooting ability of XC15-45 actually generates pretty much the same level of boken.

If you are a photography learner, XF18-55 maybe a better deal. With a zoom ring it helps understanding how you zoom and keep the distance between the camera and the subject.

Overall personally XC15-45 is a very good and far understated lens within X-Series lens series, even only with the wide to mid angle side performance. It eliminated the need for XF16 f2.8 for me, and for it's size you won't bother to bring it with you alongside with other prime lenses.

What prime lenses you will add later on will also be a thing to consider. With XF18-55 at the beginning you will probably skip the XF18 f2, XF27, maybe even the XF/XC35 f2 and XF50 f2, while for XC15-45 you will skip the XF16 f2.8.
