Pentax K50 grip squeeks

Hey people, I just acquired a second hand K50 and i really love it despite the age. It's in really good condition with around 11k clicks.

However there is one thing really bothering me and I don't know if this is normal for the K50..

The grip often kind of 'squeeks' and feels a bit lose.

Is this normal?

Mine sure doesn't, I can't picture how/where it could, it seems like a solid piece.  Is it the rubber that is coming loose or something?

Re: Pentax K50 grip squeeks

I don't know if you've had other image stabilised Pentax bodies before. The usual context in which "loose" and "squeaks" appear is the observation that something is loose inside the camera (that's by design, the image sensor is just "hanging in there" when the camera is not powered on) and that the ultrasound cleaning unit makes a squeaking sound every time the camera is switched on.

So it would be good to absolutely rule out it isn't that and the sound and loose feel is definitely at the grip.

Theoretically the rubber can come loose from the body. I'm seeing this on a different Pentax body after a decade of very intense use now. One suggestion I had was to use glue otherwise used for model building as it comes with an applicator that would allow injecting glue under the loose portions without touching any unproblematic sections.

If you can narrow down where the problem is, maybe this suggestion will come in handy.

That is a plastic body, 7 years old.  You are hearing a minor squeak of plastic against plastic, probably because the grip is hollow to accommodate the battery, and hollow things compress slightly, especially something like a hand grip.  I had a K-30 that did the same thing and I did not find it objectionable or even noticeable, actually.  K-50 had the final iteration of the very well regarded K-5 sensor, so you have a good picture taking machine.

My K70 was the same, more of a creaking, and has now developed a very slight separation at the ’seam’ below the front control wheel. There isn’t a gap, just slightly raised where it used to be flush. This was a while back and hasn’t got any worse since.
Either it has had a knock that I am not aware of, or it could be a result of carrying the camera using a wrist strap putting extra strain on the grip - my 16-85 is heavy.

I have used some oil to prevent squeeks (household gear) on a tissue and the next day the squeeking was A LOT less noticeable already !

Hello mate!

Did you disasemble the camera to lubricate it?

Definitely not normal.

From your description, it seems like the grip is cracked or broken. My K-50 bodies feel solid. No squeaks and/or loose grips.

Re: Pentax K50 grip squeeks

If the rubber part is moving, rip it away, remove old tape residues, adjust rubber size with scissors or scalpel to match the plastic perfectly and use fresh industrial grade (not office type) double-sided tape (some good quality 0.5 or 0.75mm thick 3M or similar) to put it back. Do not use liquid glue. I had to do this with my K5 rubber grip as it was pealing off about nine years ago. It holds perfectly on place since. I would say better than factory original.

If camera body makes noise when being held in hand, then there is either some crack or some screws are loose. So first thing is to tighten all screws on body and second thing is to inspect the part that makes noise. I have some similar thing on my old K20D near the SR on/off lever. Probably some damage on the plastic happened over time. I don't trust the sealing on that body so much since. But is is only back-up body and toy now for many years.. so its ok .)

Hi!

I have this annoying creak on my k-70 too, exactly as you described right below the front control wheel.

how is yours now, still creaks? mine creaks even more than it did one months ago.

The heavier the lens, the more it creaks.

Best Regards

Adam
