Not a real macro, but...
5

Both, dragonfly and butterflies were so skittish... I can't imagine how to get closer with real macro lens, considering it was quite windy.

Anyway I'm still impressed with 100-400, probably It's the most frequently used lens with my X-T3.

Great Egret Landing
5

One of the things I enjoy at the Marine Nature Study Area located in Oceanside, NY is how much activity there is. I was busy photographing tree swallow chicks being fed by the adults, when I spotted this great egret coming in.

Combine number 1 and 4, and you have music and dance

Very nice images Morris.

That's amazing... oh the gas for this lens... I would really like to play with it :). Seems like an easy way to get into macro.

Beauties Artur,

Sometimes a long lens is better as you don't disturb the subject

Wildlife dream rig for the old bones
2

Using the XT30+EOS 400/5.6 for this nab and a dream come true for my wildlife dream rig.

Long ago I used this same lens with a Sony NEX-7. Love the size weight and wieldability but no AF of course.

I'd already appreciated the 400/5.6 on the X-e3 but the T30 is just snappier in AF. Some might not like that there's no IBIS or OIS but that's ok for all the positive merits this set of gears yields...namely no trip to the chiropractor

One from this morning-

Nicely done! +1

Hope you'll enjoy with your new X-T30

BTW is this lens significantly sharper at f/8 than wide open?

Re: Great Egret Landing

Very nice set Morris, beautiful dancing heron.

I've never had a sharp flapping swallow's wings below 1/1000s, so I always keep SS at this level when shooting small birds.

Here's a proof I should practice perfect timing when landing, even if you were focused on the sitting ones.

Cheers,

Artur

Thank you Vitée,

I have a blast photographing the swallows this time of year.  Soon they will start to do air to air food exchanges and the challenge of getting a photo of that is huge.

Thank you Artur,

I like showing some wing blur as it tells the story of the motion.  You will need a lot faster than 1/1000 to freeze swallow wings.

Re: Wildlife dream rig for the old bones

Looks great Robert.

The 400mm L is only about 1/2 Lb lighter than the Fuji 100-400mm.  The 400mm L used to be considered Canon's top flight lens.  How do they compare?

Super nice series! I like the depth of field achievable with this lens over the limited DOF attained with a macro lens.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it arguing about camera features - go out and capture memories - Oh, and size does matter - shoot MF

Re: Wildlife dream rig for the old bones

Thank you Morris.

Copy variation aside, my Fuj100400 is sharper at 400mm than the EOS400/5.6 but not by a huge amount. The only advantage is size and that 1/2 pound you mention, which to me one some days can feel like a thousand pounds.

There is also the hand 'grabability'. The thin nature of the Canon in question really allows me to grab the lens mid-length and go. I can't do that with the Fuji.

Regardless I like them both, and both are proven to me for satisfaction.
