I loved using this lens when it was all I had. The sharpness wide open wasn't spectacular, but 8 Mpixels is all we had then. The main issue was distortion, which software then didn't correct for easily. Otherwise, fairly sharp and nice optical range. Loved the image stabilization and quick focusing. It got stolen with my camera, and I replaced with the 17-55/f2.8.

Re: A lot to like

There might have been a lot to like about this lens when it was new. Giving it 4 stars today seems a little crazy.

I agree, when there are so many better options out there.  The 15-85 that replaced it, or the Sigma 17-70 C both blow the 17-85 out of the water in terms of IQ and autofocus.

Re: A lot to like

I don't have critical memories of it unlike other people.

Being a kit lens with a slow aperture it was not the sort of thing I held onto for long, but I do remember I liked the close focus and the stabilisation on it. Nice size.

I don't remember image quality problems.
