Canon Rumors reports that the successor to M5 is coming in late 2020 or early 2021.

It says it will be something like APSC EOS R6. Although it is not sure that it has RF or EFM mount, it looks kind of a replacement for 7D mk2.

1. Which mount do you think the new body will take?

In my opinion, if it is truly a replacement for 7D line, it must have RF mount rather than EFM. However, I would rather have M5mk2 with R6/R6's fast AF and shutter.

If it is a mirrorless 7D, then it would have to be in RF mount. There are already several RF lenses that would be enticing to a 7D user. Not so with the EF-M lineup. Canon is not going to build a $2000 high end crop body solely for use with adapted EF glass.

I will happily adapt my f/1.8 zooms to either mount.

2. How many pixels do you think it is supposed to have: 20MP or 32MP?

R6 has 20MP, while M6mk2 has 32MP. If it has 20MP only like R6, I believe that it cannot be called as a successor to M5.

Canon has two crop sensors currently in production; 24MP and 32MP. Given the performance expectations of a mirrorless 7D, the body would most certainly use the 32MP sensor, unless Canon creates a new sensor specifically for this camera.

Canon won't develop an extra sensor for this camera. Too costly, and the 32Mp sensor is good enough.

If the new fast APSC body is released with 32MP, it must be a good option in spite of its crop sensor, when R6 has only 20MP and R5 is too expensive.

That is true, but the BIG question is: will it have IBIS

I got my RP for $850 around xmas time

and my RF 24-105 F4L for $899 around xmas time

I'm likely to get the new portrait lens, RF 85 F1.8 IS , for $550 around this December

These 2 RF lenses are forever lenses

My advise to all is get forever glass first

bodies come and go

otherwise you'll be tinkering around with weaker iteration after iteration and in the long run spend more

100% right ....... unless you`re trialling a system,  get the stuff you`re going to use all the time the priority , maybe add the cheaper Slow zoom later if you need a compact lens but as you say , Forever glass first .

Given the XT4, the A6600/6500 and all the M43 stuff it`d be suicidal for it not to have

M... 7 (?!)

Canon R5 and R6 are announced yesterday.

I do not think that Canon would release something like 7D, which has FF-like body but APSC sensor. However, I believe that Canon would continue M5 or M6 lineup for their APSC market. We had M5 first and M6 later. Now We have M6mk2, but not M5mk2 yet. Some users like me are still waiting for M5mk2. I believe even some M6mk2 users hope that M6mk2 would be upgraded at some points.

If you want something from a successor to M5/M6, what do you want to see?
