Waiting for the successor to M5
6

Canon R5 and R6 are announced yesterday.

I do not think that Canon would release something like 7D, which has FF-like body but APSC sensor. However, I believe that Canon would continue M5 or M6 lineup for their APSC market. We had M5 first and M6 later. Now We have M6mk2, but not M5mk2 yet. Some users like me are still waiting for M5mk2. I believe even some M6mk2 users hope that M6mk2 would be upgraded at some points.

If you want something from a successor to M5/M6, what do you want to see?

R6 form & function & mount, but crop sensor: I do not care the current EFM lenses and bodies. Please go for RF even with APSC. Better to do it now than never.

So weird to see the m-line framed only as R wannabe.

i want an M5 Mk2 that has all the improvements of the M6 Mk2 (especially the focusing improvements), the dials of the M5, a viewfinder, and ibis would be awesome. But I don’t see an option to vote for that.

i have no use for the R line, which is too large, too heavy, and too expensive.

I would like a native large zoom lens (300mm or more at the long end would be awesome) with better optics than the 55-200.

I'd be happy with a M50.2 with the 33mpxl sensor.

I prefer the full swivel LCD to tilt only.

Also desire a native M macro in 70-90mm even if it is an f4.

Re: Waiting for the successor to M5

Canon should just stop developing the M system altogether and just focus on the R.

They can make M5ii in the R mount. Just port the current lenses over.

R mount can be made compact. Just look at the Z mount kit lens.

That is true in the sense that all Canon EF lenses that can be adapted are only getting old. However, that idea seems far from Canon's current plan. But who knows?

I am not interested in a higher pixel count, but I think Canon will release M50mk2 with it eventually.

Regarding LCD, Canon won't go back to tilt LCD for M50 lineup. I prefer 3-way tilt LCD as in Fujifilm for photography. But considering R/RP/R5/R6, I suppose that all lineups would have the fully articulated one.

As you may know, EF-M 62mm f/4 Macro IS STM is rumored.

That's reason why I put the number 3 and 4 in the list.

I am sorry that Canon or the third parties appear not to be interested in such lenses.

There is a 50mm 1.8 STM coming to R. This focal length is probably the most popular focal length for all prime lenses.

Canon is making affordable lenses and will want affordable bodies to mate with them. The RP is the cheapest FF. I don't think it will ever go cheaper then its current price point as Canon still want to segment their customers.

Canon is not going to ignore the $400-$800 price range customers that would want to purchase the 50mm R 1.8.

Canon can either make a R CROP body to fit in that price slot or they can make a EFM 50mm.  My money is on the body as that is the better long term strategy.

With COVID putting even more stress on the camera industry. It may accelerate Canon's decision to stop investing in M mount especially if sales are tanking. The m50ii would of started planning last year so there is still a good chance it would still be released.

The M5 is not coming to M mount and I don't see the M6iii coming as well. COVID really changed a lot of strategies.

To me It's clear the direction of R with these budget lenses. It will cater to all customers and price points. The budget bodies will naturally follow.

Basically M6-II + EVF + EFCS + IBIS

Basically M6-II + EVF + EFCS + IBIS in an M5 body, DPAF-II if poss  , if they want to update the shape to R5/6 then fine but keep it M5 sized ..

Add a M50-II , Basically a 32mp M50 with EFCS and DPAF-II, no IBIS to save cost

At the very least give us an M6-II in an M5 body with EFCS .... that won`t cost much R&D as all the bits are there , all they have to do is slap it together and stick it on the shelves at £899 body only - they`ll rake it in

I would like to see a small body with EVF, pop up flash, tilted screen, excellent autofocus and image quality  and great native lenses , specially a lightweight 70-300 zoom, if Sony can do it why not Canon?  (don't like the idea of adding extra bulk with adapters)

M6 mark II functionality - with IBIS - either a M6 mark III or M5 mark II.

And a 15-60 f/2.8-4 EF-M lens.

Key thing for me would be the weight and size. M works for me. R is too big and heavy now.

I'd love to have IBIS - but the important thing is focussing speed and accuracy. The M50 is almost there, M6 II is there.

I like the fully articulating screen. I won't buy another camera without it now.

Small body, large body - i dont mind either way. I just want dials, weather sealing and as long as its not fully articulated screen im good.

I do agree fuji had the best  screens, i already have a camera with a fully articulated screen and its very frustrating to use.

I want a M5 Mk2 to have...

M6m2's sensor = 30 mpx or thereabouts

IBIS => and for it unlock high resolution sensor shift modes, think 100mpx on a tripod for landscapes etc.

Electronic First Curtain shutter + silent mode.

In the M5 body, with 2 control dials.

Almost all of the above tech Canon already has - so get it sorted Canon!

They seem to have gotten over the hangup that M is gonna hurt DSLR or R sales.

I adapt EF, so I generally don't care about M lenses BUT Canon have missed a serious trick with not making a very long lens in M format. But they do seem open to long lenses in R, with these newly announced 100-500, 600mm and 800mm f11 lenses.

A 100-400mm f4-f6.3 EF-M lens - smaller than what is currently available would sell surely? It doesn't have to be L grade, but as long as it isn't rubbish.

This way you leverage the extra 1.6 reach of APS-C and get a long lens in a smaller package?

What is EFCS? Does m6mk2 have it?

EFCS = Electronic First Curtain Shutter ...... every M APART from theM6-II has it , the 90D which is based on the M6-II has it , even the EOS-R range have it - sadly the M6-II does not so you get resolution reducing shutter shock with IS lenses on that camera . from the numerous reports on here , the 15-45 is worst , other IS lenses are affected , for me that`s a deal killer as I want 32 RAW Mp from a 32Mp camera, not less than the original 8yr oid 18Mp  M .. Instagrammers won`t care of course

You have completely ignored the M50, the best selling camera in Japan (apparently).

I would like M50 MkII with the internals of the M6II, IBIS (if possible) and more EF-M lenses like 15-60 f/4 or a EF-M 55-250 f/4-5.6
