SYDNEY (AUSTRALIAN) R5/R6 prices right now: !!!!!!!?

The Canadian dollar right now is almost the same as the Australian dollar. In fact, the Australian dollar was slightly stronger last night. Here's the price right now:

CAN $100 = AUD $106 as right now.

Canadian retailers like The Camera Store and Henry's (in Canada) are listing $3,499 for the EOS R6 and $5,399 for the R5. So dollar for dollar, that's what I would expect to pay in Australia if fair trade was a fair deal.

Think about this: We're in a Recession right now with MILLIONS of Australians looking for work, unable to find work or preparing for the Depression that is most likely to follow. We are going BACK into lockdown. Some retail stores have only recently reopened. But now it looks like we'll have to shut down again for months at a time. The entire state of Victoria is cut off from the rest of the country as of yesterday with police and the army blocking all roads in and out. 5 Million people in Melbourne are now in lockdown (again). All those given permission to dip into their Superannuation have spent it already. To raise the prices of these cameras in Australia will be like trying to squeeze blood from a stone.

Some of the prices fluctuated by $100 just after I posted the list. They dropped by that amount. I've amended them and reposted.  Looks like they're still figuring out how to be competitive with these higher-than-usual camera and accessory pricing as set out by Canon.

It's normal retail behavior to list different RRP prices indifferent countries with a basis of what the market will bear and local economics.

I think your state Tax varies from one Canadian province to another.  I'm not sure if that tax is applied with sales that are sent out of the state or not.  In Australia we have a sales tax of 10% Goods and Services Tax (GST) - which is included in the purchase price of any item.  There are also import tariffs to consider.  You raise a valid point to consider when calculating.

Another alternative for Australians would be to take an overseas vacation and claim the tax be deducted under the Tourist Refund Scheme (Duty Free).  Unfortunately, this requires international travel, something we can't indulge in right now as all international travel has ended due to the Pandemic/Quarantine here.

Canon has learned to hold short, 1-week and 2-week sales  which includes new model cameras and lenses.  They will undoubtedly do this with the new gear.   My suggestion for any Australians who find the prices too steep at the moment - would be to watch out for one of these sales.  Most of the dealers will be involved and you can buy below RRP.
