After July 9th, who is in for R5s?

I seriously love what Canon did yesterday. Great-great move to catch up with Sony. I would say that the only two things that I believe were negative for me is the heating issue and short battery performance. I do not use video, though, so practically I would not be impacted.

I, however, feel that this is not the camera for me. I am into landscapes most of the time and really want to spend money on something that will be perfectly designed for it. IBIS is not needed, high FPS not needed, video not needed.

Pure focus on high MP, sharpness and DR at base ISO.

I think that there is a high probability that Canon will release R5s in 2021. Who is in the same group as me?

The R5 is a tour de force in video with stills being an incremental advance WRT to the competition. However, IBIS is  a leap for Canon.

The issue for me is that I rarely need a high frame rate or IBIS as my business is architectural photography. As for DR and res, the 5DsR is more then adequate and the mkIV is actually used more. Ironically, the only advance that is useful is the USB C port for a better connection to my CamRanger.

A new, high res sensor in the range of 80MP may show up but I doubt people will be as impressed as they think they will be. Even 100MP Fuji files are impressive only in the aspect of being able to zoom in to a crazy degree. DR is better but in most situations an advantage that is invisible.

I have been in this too long to get gulled by the promise of technology. The images we get today are brilliant, limited only by subject matter and operator skill and luck.

you are the best candidate for canon 5DsR camera, it is an amazing landscape tool! i just got one and love it. i do birding, portrait, and some macro with it and makes me like it every day, all over again! you can find one at a real attractive price on gray market it won't disappoint.

regards.

My wife had given up on cameras and is using her i-Phone 11Max for video. She has pre-ordered the R5 for its 8K and 4K/120, the time limits are not a problem at all for her style of capture. Canon getting back a customer from cell phones is a big deal I think.

I'm a Sony (A7R3)/Fujifilm (XP3) user and shoot stills. I've combed the specs, the R5 is impressive, the 45MP is a still photo sweet spot for resolution when considering diffraction, noise, and dynamic range compromises introduced with higher MPs.

I guarantee you if they unveil a R5S, it will be at least about the same cost. That's what happened with 5DSR in 2015. That said, I'm satisfied with 45 megapixels for landscapes. It was not long ago people were buying the 5DSR for billboards and large prints. If Canon does unveil something between 75-100 megapixels, a part of me is actually expecting it to cost even more than the R5, due to the fact that puts you squarely in medium format range. The 100 megapixel Fuji GFX runs $10,000.

Re: After July 9th, who is in for R5s?

i am completely aware it will not be cheap and I am ready to pay even more than the cost of R5. I just dream about a pure landscape oriented camera:-)

I do not have any experience with Mirrorless yet, but this is what I know about what landscape camera should have:

1. I do not tale a lot of pictures. I anticipate and when there is the perfect composition and light, I take several exposures. So ultimate detail, sharpness and resolution

2. it is always on a tripod and always with MF. AF is really nice for portraits and I do them sometimes too

3. DR

4. Battery life. Think about it, if you go to Antarctica or Canadien Rockies in January...how many batteries do you need to last one day?

i am not even sure mirrorless is a good choice for such conditions.

The R5 is worth every penny IFF one can make good use of high FPS, video in 8k, 4k etc.

However for landscape photography one should think twice whether an upgrade from R is worth it. Nice to have for landscape certainly is IBIS.

Anyway, I will be in for the R5S. Should arrive early next year. Besides 80mp I would expect specific features like pixel-shift. Another benefit: Any problems that might surface with all the new technology introduced in the R5 (IBIS etc.) would be fixed in the R5S.

"4. Battery life. Think about it, if you go to Antarctica or Canadien Rockies in January...how many batteries do you need to last one day?"

Battery life will not be better in an R5S:

- even more pixels to read/process

- high energy consumers like EVF with 5.6mp will certainly be the same in R5S

That is why I am wondering if mirrorless is a good solution for such trips

Re: After July 9th, who is in for R5s?

It depends on how big a print that you will print. It was not long ago the 40Mp is big for landscape so the R5 would be a landscape camera.

Well, I use 5D MKIII for landscapes, so it is also a landscape camera with 22 MP:-) But this is not what I mean

So why wait? If 45Mp is enough then you got what you need?

If I was not aware that there will be high MP camera, I would get R5

Re: After July 9th, who is in for R5s?

Another landscape photographer here, and I agree the R5 is not so exciting for us. As you said, shooting off a tripod we don't need IBIS, or FPS or video, or fancy AF. All we really need is high resolution, good DR at base ISO and weather sealing/reliability in the lightest weight possible (at an affordable price).

The only thing about the R5 that sounds interesting to me, has been mention of improved DR. I'd like to know more about that. Improved from R and 5DIV? If it's a big improvement at base ISO, that might be worth it over a 5DSR at less than half the price. Then if Canon bring out some light F4 lenses (RF 24-70 F4, RF 16-35 F4, etc) there could be a potential weight saving as well.

Battery life, for me, isn't an issue. I can make one DSLR battery last all week. (I'm very selective).

If Fuji made the GFX 100 in a smaller, lighter body, without the IBIS, at half the price we'd all probably jump on it. However, I'm not aware of any such rumours.

some people are already asking what camera canon will introduce after R5/R6? they are already beyond R5/R6 and looking ahead in the future

could care less about the DR part .. but high MP is what i'm looking for.

DR is overrated.

I remember when the 5D Mark II came out with 21mp ..and everyone was like diffraction! too small pixels! who needs all these MP's??? MegaPixel race!!

I am also landscape shooter currently shooting with a 60MP Sony A7R IV and D850, I do have a 1Dx for events and sports too, I am actually not looking forward to a higher resolution EOS but thinking to get rid of both my Nikon and Sony to get a Fuji GFX100, money wise it will not be that big of a delta at all if I got rid of my Sony A7R IV with bunch of Loxia and Voigtlander and 3 GM lenses. i think I am at the point either live with 45-60MP FF or upgrade to a medium format if I really want to upgrade, a 60 or 70MP FF won't give me that much "upgrade" at all. I have been playing with friend's Fuji GFX100 for a while and I know adding another 20MP to a FF is still not equal a GFX100. i will be just waiting $$$ keep chasing more pixel on the FF bodies. and that's why I have not pre-ordered the R5.

To be honest, for those purely interested in landscape but not ready to drop $10K on a Medium Format body, the Fuji GFX50 is still way better than any FF in the market in my opinion. it's only $4500, only $700 more than the R5. $4500 for a MF, think this way, back in 2004, my 1Ds II cost $8K, almost twice as much as a MF today. Of curse we have to also factor in the cost of the Fuji G mount lens too.
