I like Canon's plan with telephoto lenses...
1

I think Canon recognized that they have the wide aperture telephoto area covered better than anyone with their EF lenses, and that making smaller telephotos for the R line is where there is great potential.  Making a 600mm F4 for the R system will not have much of a benefit over their existing EF lens, so at the moment its not worthwhile.  But making a very small 600mm that extends like a zoom is something no one else has.

So I like the idea of fulfilling the promise of "mirrorless can be smaller and lighter" with these longer lenses.  Because we already have the best line up of wide aperture telephoto lenses on the planet.  I can wait for mirrorless versions. (and used EF versions that work very well are going to be a lot cheaper anyway)

Now I just how that rumored price of the 100-500 is wrong.  Because that looks like the perfect travel/hiking/wildlife lens for me.

Indeed, at least from canonrumors:

  • Canon RF 85mm f/2 IS STM Macro £649
  • Canon RF 100-500mm f/4-7.1L IS USM £2,899
  • Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM £699
  • Canon RF 800mm f/11 IS STM £929

100-500 is over budget for me, but hey I don't think I've ever had a chance to own a 600mm and 800mm lens with AF at those prices. Yes its F11 but it's still an option. I don't know about the 600mm cause we do have the likes of 150-600 from Tamron and Sigma and the 60-600 Sigma, but I would imagine this 600mm is a lot lighter, aligning to the reason for going mirrorless, lighter and more compact overall size. And the 800mm at least now there's a cheaper option to even reach 800mm now which I welcome.

I am very interested in the 800mm but I am not sure I would like the R5. Will have to rent it out and try it first. The EVF is not quite there for me yet but I hope this one will cross the line.

The 100-500 is similar to my 100-400 + 1.4x when it came out. L lenses are always $$$

Some have said the 800 F11 is like an MFT 400 F5.6 lens.   They make a great 300 F4, and with a 1.4x TC it becomes a 420 (840) F5.6 (F11).   I've read a lot of good things and seen some wonderful pictures from the lens/TC.

I don't know if the Canon will be as good, but it looks to be 1/3rd or 1/4th the price,
