Dear EOS R owners, please share you thoughts if you are planing to keep R or upgrade with R6/R6. Simple, like

I plan to upgrade my second camera to a lightly used R, once the R5 or 6 is out.

I used to shoot only Canon for about 25 years. About six years ago I started shooting mirrorless along side and eventually gave up all my Canon DSLR last year but did add back in an EOR at Christmas time. For now my other mirrorless systems are Sony where I now have a full set of native glass so I won't consider the R5, which I think would be my upgrade path, for a while. First I want to understand what it really is and second see what other glass is in it future.  For me one of my main interest is BIF and I gave up my 1DX awhile back for the Sony A9 and a key question is will the R5 be goo for BIF. I personally am not into 8K video so will the RF mount family of bodies be a good fit?

None of the above. My choice is not offered: Update RP to either R5 or R6, depending on actual mp of each and how good low light/high iso/DR are on each.

If truly 20mp, the R6 has to be better on those aspects than the R5 to even be in the running.

RP owner.  I intend to sell my RP and buy someone' gently used R.

danferrin, can you elaborate more on why an R would appeal to you more than the RP? I'd have assumed that most RP users would be pleased with the features and abilities of their camera.

I can sell both my R and RP to buy an R5 plus cash of course. However, for my purpose, it's too much of a camera. I also haven't been that "married" to RF lenses. I'll take my time.

I am more interested in the new long RF lenses which I would get for the R first then move to the R5 and sell or trade the R.

All this depends on reviews of the lenses and the R5.

I was planning on keeping both my RPs until the R6 drops in price either at the holidays or next year. However, I might sell one now because the market will be flooded with used Rs and RPs really soon and there is no way I will get the value I will now where people are posting WTB posts for these cameras. Its currently a sellers market for the R/RP that will quickly turn into a buyers market soon after July 9th. Will set that money from the RP sale aside for a future R6 purchase.

I'm not an RP user but an R user and I can think of lots of reasons.

  • better sensor with more dynamic range and better low light capability
  • better battery life
  • higher FPS
  • higher maximum shutter speed
  • better low light AF
  • better LCD
  • AF in 4k video

Because of a few of these, I didn't even really consider the RP, although I'm sure it's a good camera.

sorry about that. As R owner myself, I opened that to get some help with making decision what to do best, see reasons why, etc

Thank you!

If R5 is too much of camera, would you consider R6 as an option to upgrade R, not RP?

At the moment I'm happy with my R, and will probably prefer to add to my native lens collection in the near term. The RF 100-500 L looks like an attractive proposition. I'll have to see how the two new bodies shape up before looking for an upgrade - the R5 looks very interesting, but the R6 might be better value...

Me too. The R is less than two years old, not enough to have gotten my money's worth with it; besides, the way I use it (mostly photographing my baby daughter), the only new known R5/R6 feature that will improve my photography is IBIS--and even that is iffy, since she usually commands shutter speed above 1/100s @ 50mm.

I'll consider getting an R5 or R6 again next year, when the launch pricing premium will have dissipated and my existing R more thoroughly amortized (in a utilitarian sense, not accounting sense). Given that R5 is expected to cost something like $4000 at first, the dropoff in price will probably more than offset the drop in disposal price of the R.

...Anyway, that is what the rational side of my mind is saying. The irrational side may hijack my browser and order an R5 next week.

No. I know I will eventually buy the R5, perhaps a year or two down the road. Until then, I'd keep my R and RP.

Option D, keep R, add R6 to my kit once it's cheap enough.

If I get the R5 I'm going to keep my R. Along with the RF 24-105 it is a good travel/walk around and 30 megapixels is all I need for that. I can't see the need to upgrade for that purpose for a long time.
