Vanguard with sticky handles

I'm looking for an answer as to why the handles on my Vanguard tripod have gone sticky. It's the rubber grips on the two adjustment handles. Any idea what is causing it and can they be fixed/replaced?

thanks

I thought I made a mistake once. But I was wrong!

The handles on my Induro 3-way head did that. It has something to do with the vinyl/rubber that deteriorates over time. I found some old automotive treatment that slowed it down for a while, but it came back. It gets sticky.

I can replace mine if I want, but I've considered spraying them with Plasticote and see what happens.

handlebar tape

I saw this in the field one time so I can't take credit:

Get handlebar tape from a bicycle shop. It grips well and can be easily replaced, if needed.
