New Class Action for Pentax owners with aperture block issue
8

Heads up Pentax people. If you have Pentax K-30, K-50, or K-70 I learned about a new Class Action Lawsuit over the aperture block issue. Someone earlier today in another thread said the K-01 suffers from this problem also. I unfortunately have two of the affected models. The lawsuit alleges Pentax was selling a defective product and did nothing to fix it after the warranty ran (other than charge people a lot of money for repairs). It has sort of turned me off from the brand and I haven't purchased a Pentax since. I will be contacting this law firm shortly.

The Pentax Aperture Black Picture Problem Class Action Lawsuit is Janet Kyszenia v. Ricoh USA Inc., Case No. 1:20-cv-02215, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

"Around 12,000 Pentax cameras were sold, says the Pentax camera aperture problem class action lawsuit, which brought Ricoh Inc. more than $5,000,000 in sales.

The plaintiff says that, despite collecting millions in profits"

Millions in profits were generated by the sale of 12,000 lower-end cameras in the U.S.?

Too funny! This suit doesn't stand a chance.

Well, I just don't understand how this will help Joe and Jan, whose cameras died a couple years ago.

Well, they might receive a refund, offer for Pentax to repair the camera for free or a voucher that can be used to buy another Pentax model.  That's just three common remedies, but other possibilities for compensation exist.

Honestly, one thing that Ricoh should learn is to professionally address complaints from their userbase

The prolonged silence on the aperture block failure issue means, they chose to learn it the Nikon way

This says the price Ricoh sold cameras into the channel at was > $433 each.

If they made millions plural on $5M sales, they were making a margin of 40%.  Doesn't quite ring true.

Not necessarily.  The figures may include lens and other accessories that result from the sale of the body.  But for the consumer purchasing the K-50 body (as an example) they would never have purchased a zoom lens, flash, camera bag, etc.

Pentax Australia is still repairing them for free - no problems here.

And yet they won’t in other places....hence the lawsuit.

So is the problem the Distributors or do we just have an exceptionally good one?

What are consumer protection laws like in Australia?  In general Europe is better than North America, but I am not familiar with other places.

Based the reply to me, I think it was "Ricoh made lots of profits - even if it made little from the sales of these cameras, so even if they were sold at a loss, profits elsewhere should be used to put things right here".

Yes, Europe is better.

Instead of meaningful consumer protection laws, the US has a system of class action lawsuits, which usually results in a company disappearing or withdrawing from the US market.

Of course the original problem (non-reaction to complaints) was caused by Pentax-US. But this particular lawsuit is bad luck for the US Pentaxians.

Well, in the USA at least class actions protect the customers. But not in Canada. Here, you are simply doomed .

No, it has nothing with the distributors. You simply live in a highly developed (economically and morally) country!
