How does a Tamron 18 400 work on my D7100?

I can only guess somewhere along the line this has been discussed? The Tamron has the electromagnetic aperture, and on my D7100 will it work okay or will a firmware update have to be done?

That would apply to Nikons AF P lenses as well as their "E", versions. If you didn't do a firmware update what will or won't happen? I've never tried a firmware update, but just wondering.

I see the Tamron is compatible with the D7100 but?

I'm looking to maybe trimming some equipment down, and maybe selling my 80 400 G, Its just so heavy and cumbersome to carry any more.

Just looking at some possibilities to streamline some gear. Not a plan.My main use would be at local zoo-- when it re-opens to full visitation.

I thank you for help.

I think it should. The latest update just added compatibility with Z series.

Re: How does a Tamron 18 400 work on my D7100?

Electromagnetic Diaphragm Mechanism

An electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism in the lens barrel provides highly accurate electronic diaphragm or aperture blade control when using auto exposure during continuous shooting. With conventional D/G type lenses, the diaphragm blades are operated by mechanical linkage levers.

The DX 16-80 F4E of 2015 was one of the first Nikon lens to come with the E. It replaced the conventional at the time D/G type lens.

If you have a DX 35 1.8G, on the back you will see a lever that stops down the lens. With an E lens this is handled by the camera.

I forget if the D5000/D90 was the last camera to use G type lens. There is no firmware upgrade as you need the contact between lens & body for it to work.

I have a Tamron 18-400 on my D5300. Great lens to take on a cruise & you can't zoom with your feet.  Good lens to take on a sunny day to the zoo. May get a little heavy if you mostly use the 18-55 ranges. At 18 the animal can be up to the fence. At 400 it can be anywhere in the cage. Some us the 18 end to "find" the animal then zoom in to 400 or whatever you need.  In dim light or indoors you may want a 1.8 lens for the extra light.

Re: How does a Tamron 18 400 work on my D7100?

Thank you, just to satisfy my own uncertainty, I contacted Nikon, and sent my D7100 in for a firmware update and sensor cleaning.

I'm planning to get the 18 400 as a lightweight carry all. That will make my Nikon 80 400, expendable. I haven't been using my D7100 because i have a spot on sensor, and haven't been able to remove it and I don't have sensor cleaner.

I too have a D5300, its my most often grabbed camera for a general outing. And my new D750 just sits on the shelf-- for now.

But thank you for your time and answers.
