Video editing on the NX1 with Kinemaster

i do most of my editing on Kinemaster - it's a great app and means I don't have to fire up the computer!

However, I've noticed something slightly strange with the way it seems to handle the HEVC files of the NX1. It seems that by default the output footage is a bit darker - there seems to be less detail in the shadows and the highlights don't look as good.

I have been shooting with default Gamma - should I try something like Gamma DR and then grade it? I'm tempted to use DR or C as I can then bring down the sharpness.

If I use DR what settings would you recommend?

Which Luminance Level do you have selected?

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, I don't really know what it means by luminance levels and how the different options affect the resulting footage.

Gamma DR will make the image "flatter" but you would likely still lose some detail in shadows when importing your video.

Luminance level is a range. 0-255 means 0=pure black, 255=pure white. A loss of detail in shadows suggests KineMaster might be interpreting the luminance range as beginning at 16 and discarding the lower values. A lesser range records brightness with lower granularity, but may be necessary here. Alternatively, you could try adjusting the black level, but that will affect contrast.

Instead of changing settings on your camera, you could get another app to re-encode your videos before loading them into KineMaster. This would be time-consuming however.

Thanks! So do you think I may be better off trying 16-255? Or would it just be the same?

I did some tests earlier and Gamma DR seems to work best and is easier to grade it seems.

There is no Gamma DR for the nx500 I don't think but is there any way to achieve a flatter image in that camera?

I think it's worth trying.

Otto might have an answer to this.

There is no gamma DR for nx500 and gamma DR creates a curve while picture profile settings operate linearly, so you cannot create a gamma DR profile. I've tried endlessly when I was shooting video with both cameras. That being said, - 3 on saturation and contrast helps a bit without making the footage horrible to grade. I wouldn't go past - 5.

Brilliant, thanks! Will try that.

Can't believe I've had the NX1 nearly 5 years and never ventured out of normal gamma! I even had the sharpness on -10 on Gamma C and DR but didn't to into either mode. Somehow I must have thought it would still take effect..Duh!

Thanks. Using Gamma DR has solved the issue of Kinemaster making the output too dark, but a new problem with that app on my Tab S6 is that often it will freeze when exporting 4k. I've contacted them but can't resolve it. In the meantime I'm exporting as QHD and this is still very good and looks great on the Tab S6.

It's just a shame that there is a lack of decent video editor apps for Android. Cyberlink power director is good but doesn't output at PAL framerates.

Kinemaster seems the best but with the exporting issue it's a pain, especially as it's subscription. It's also lacking some features such as stablisation and de-noise.

well android devices do not have nearly the horsepower of a computer. You can try shooting in normal or HQ quality rather than PRO, as your crashes may be a result of too high bitrate [possibly leading to out of memory errors].

I thought that but this Android Tab is surprisingly powerful. When it works it works well. Exports in 4k much quicker than my computer. Granted my computer is a few years old but nevertheless it has an intel core i7 processor and NVIDIA GTX950A 2 GB Graphics Card so on paper I would have expected it to be faster.

About NX1 settings, or NX500, you can check the next page:
https://nxcamera.wordpress.com/ .

You can ignore the 200 mbps in title, it refer to the hacked cameras - if you don't have it just go for Pro (regular 80 mbps).

The page was the cumul of few threads and years from DPR, EOSHD & others.
Most advanced users in video - including pros, have agreed these are the best settings for post-processing, and not only.

That is really helpful, thanks! I've bookmarked it! 🙂

Re: Video editing on the NX1 with Kinemaster

I thought I'd update this thread as I'm no longer using Kinemaster.

Although I like the app, there were some 'bugs' that seemed to keep increasing over time. The first one was that it would often freeze when outputting to 4k, the second was that NX1 footage was darker and more contrasty for some reason, and the third issue (the straw that broke the camel's back) was that footage from my Note 20Ultra was jerky for the first few seconds - no idea why this was.

Anyhow, thankfully I'm able to use Powerdirector and even the free version of this works well enough for me. The reason I went to Kinemaster in the first place was that it was the only app I could find that could output to 25fps. Recently Powerdirector have added this option, so there's now no reason to stick with Kinemaster.
