Re: Canon aiming for a $799 full-frame camera?

Are the M50 and M50 mkii the same sensor as the M6 mkii?

No.  Both versions of the M50 use the older 24mp sensor that was in the original M5 and M6.  The M6 II uses a newer 32mp sensor.

lol

Wait-you can see me?

These kind of discussion are old like photography history. Bigger film/sensor, better quality. Nobody can change that. And like I say often, full frame is like m43 and APS-C the "poor man's" solution. Medium frame have the real magic.

…all I’m sayin’ is: don’t put unrealistic expectations on your gear and you will be quite satisfied with your images if you do your part…

one needs to understand the capabilities before buying into a system

that is realistic approach

for me, M has stagnated and I have skipped buying in to it

the release of the trio of sigma primes gave m a potential new life

but canon skipped the m5II which is a shame

Now, when the time comes that you need or want to produce work at a certain level-then find out what gear you need to meet that need and use it well.

research first and skip what will fall short

I didn’t buy a refurb M50 and EF-M 22mm f/2.0 expecting it to match the output of a 5D IV and my 135L….

But I have been impressed with the images it has taken and quite enjoyed using it…

Happy happy happy with the $700 I spent on it. Lol

my RP was $850 and is quite light to carry one handed with a wrist strap and goes well with the 35

Camera was bought specifically for travel. It has all the customisable features I require, including resolution, but is seriously let down by the poor quality of lenses by Canon, particularly the zoom range. Canon’s hype for this camera is therefore misleading, if not downright false. This means I’m unable to write anything too positive about the camera ‘cause I’ve yet to discover its real potential for taking high quality photographs!

lenses for it are: siggy 56 f1.4 and siggy 16 f1.4 and canon 32 f1.4 and canon 11-22

beyond that - a lot of buts

I completely agree with your lens selection here.

The EF-M 32mm F1.4 STM and Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN are superb with the M6II sensor. As is the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. I'm assuming the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN will be similarly excellent.

I’m fairly new to the EOS M system. I bought my daughter an M5 a while back, and had never really gotten into it. The appeal of the EOS M system lies in its favourable size: IQ ratio. To be honest, I never gave the M5 a chance. I started with the kit EF-M 15-45mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM for the first few days. I took it out side-by-side with the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM on my 6D.

You want to talk about physics and MTF charts?

This was a comprehensive trouncing on more subjective, and intangible fronts.
Colours. Contrast. Sharpness. Detail. Depth of field. Rendering of out of focus areas. This was a ruthless beatdown. You want to try getting some natural looking colours out of this lens?

Forget it.

I believe canon made an error in using this as the gateway drug that draws folks into their system.

When I bought the M6II it came packaged with the EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM. I had done a fair bit of research and reading reviews about the lens, so my expectations were reasonably high.

In my early tests I would say this lens is marginally acceptable as a general purpose lens. Probably overall better than the EF-M 15-45mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM, but, again, just marginally acceptable for my eyes. Both of these zooms are outresolved by the sensors.

That being said, my experiences with the EF-M 32mm F1.4 STM, the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN, and the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM on the M6II have been so impressive that it has rekindled my enthusiasm for this system, and for photography in general.

As a general walkaround combo, the M6II with the EF-M 32mm F1.4 STM is SO compact and light; SO easy to use and get good shots; and produces such amazingly good results when I look at the files back at home, I'm starting to carry it with me everywhere I go.

Seriously this combo just kills it on so many fronts.

MAC, I always appreciate your forum contributions…

I believe we are in full agreement. My original post was supposed to be directed “up the line” lol.

I wasn’t buying into a system, I was buying a mirrorless body with a better sensor than my SL1. The smaller lenses that are available for it, no matter how lacking they may be, are just icing on the cake.

Every EF lens I have used on my $300 M50 body has *at least* matched, and more often than not exceeded the performance when used with my SL1. As long as my M50 powers up I simply can not lose.

and this is with the M50. I can’t imagine how much more *interesting* the M6 II will be once those drop below $500 on the Canon Refurb website. Or perhaps an RP in a few months. Seems quiute capable of producing fine images from what I’ve seen.

Now, if I were approached and offered a paid gig I may start thinking about an R6.

But for now? I’m having a blast

all the best….

though the R6 would be nice, I do gigs with my RP and 6D

i am waiting for the right m setup as a 3rd camera on gigs
