Fuji X100V - 50mm/70mm digital converter quality !
2

I really, really like the Fuji X100V.  I previously owned a Fuji X100S.  Great camera.  Begged to be picked up.  Wanted to take it everywhere with me.  I did however miss the ability to utilise various focal lengths in the range 28mm - 70mm.

The Fuji X100V appeals greatly.  Love the design, weather sealing, screen and redesigned lens - It's all great.  And it would be my perfect camera, as DPreview have stated that the wcl ii conversion lens works really well in tandem with the new designed lens.  Brilliant.

I realise that I can utilise the 50mm / 70mm in camera digital converter ( I do not wish to use the 50mm add on converter , as its too large )

The question is :

Are the 50mm / 70mm in camera digital converter images of decent quality i.e. will they stand up to good looking A3 / A4 size prints ?

Does anybody on the forum have any full res images taken using the 50mm / 70mm digital in camera converter that they wish to share ?

Finally a big thank you for your patience and reading this.

Kind regards,

Keep safe ......... Adam

Remember this is JPEG only. Only using a phyiscal converter will yield "full res" RAF images.

Like you I was encouraged to read that the image quality with the WCL-X100 converter attached is significantly improved. Without wishing to hijack your thread, I'd be very interested to know if the image quality when using the TCL-X100 35mm (50mm) teleconverter has similarly benefited. And yes I agree, it's a rather unbalanced, front heavy combo, but in a pinch, when needs must, etc...

I actually tried the 50mm digital zoom from a X100F on a rail yard shot.  When printed at 300ppi it came out great; I wouldn't hesitate to use it if the need arose.  I haven't tried it yet on my 100V, but Fuji seems to do a pretty good job with the code.

You could shoot RAW crop in post and resize back up I guess.

Right. I was trying to understand what the OP meant by "full res." To me the full resolution the camera can generate is RAF. JPEG is not, to me. But different people have different understandings.

So to get the maximium MP out the camera only the physical lens, teleconverter, would do that. This is because I shoot RAF only. If I need a SOOC JPEG for any reason I extract it from the RAF file using GraphicConverter 11.

Hi Rich,

Would you like to share the image , if not I understand.

Could you please let me know the size of the print please.

Thanks for reply.

Thanks AFM.  Reason why I like the in camera convertor is that you see the actual image from a 50 / 70mm perspective before recording it.

I agree. Seeing the scaled image is helpful. I have emailed Fuji asking that they allow the uncropped RAW image to be recorded when the digital teleconverter is used, so we get the best of both worlds. Feel free to be #2 on that request list!

Booray Perry on his YouTube channel compared the in-camera teleconverter to cropping and resizing in photoshop, and assessed no significant difference in image quality.

Here are some more examples in this video from German photographer Jochen:

He shows digital teleconverter examples at: 7:18. Hope this helps.

Sorry for the late reply.  Let me dig up the JPEG for the rail yard and try to post it.  I've not posted photos on this forum so it may take a couple of attempts.

Have a great week ahead.

There is no such thing as a free lunch, a crop is a crop whether it's done in camera or in post. Likewise upscaling is upscaling.
But is it possible that in the upscaling Fuji are in fact doing something clever and getting the compression etc. you would see with a "real" telephoto lens?
Is it also possible that they know how to upscale their proprietary formats better than the post production software guys do? (that might explain why RAW zooms were a problem).

The terrific thing about the X100V with the latest firmware is that you don't have to sacrifice the RAW to shoot the JPG with the digital tele converter anymore. Activating the TC mode in RAW gives you a JPEG with the crop/upscaling, plus a RAW with the full 35mm-equiv image and the ability to do any in-camera fuji RAW processing to either version.

Personally, I think the TC images look pretty incredible in all but the worst light at the first tier (50mm) and passable at the second (70mm). Both look significantly better IMHO when you add a bit of fuji's in-camera grain to cover up some of the artifacting, which can be a little strange-looking. The physical TCL adapter is incredibly sharp on the new X100V lens, so with that on, you get a bump up to a pretty clean 70mm-ish frame, and an emergency 100mm.

to get wider, I use the WCL that was made for the X70, which gives a FOV of about 26mm-equiv instead of 28. It's very sharp stopped down, but it smears detail a little bit wide open and introduces some chromatic aberration, neither of which are issues with the X100 WCL, from what I've seen and heard. Still, I'm very happy with the extra wide reach it affords me, and I've shot events with it and gotten no complaints.

Essentially, with the X100V and the adapters, you get a pretty versatile kit with sharp output encompassing 28mm/35mm/50mm/70mm (and 100mm in a pinch) that'll just about squeeze into a hip pack.
