IR photography with in-camera processing
2

Last week there was a post by AlmostDoctor regarding handheld IR photography using cameras with IBIS. Since I have an IR720 filter, I gave it a try.

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4492445#forum-post-63994574

Taken with my Panny 20mm f1.7 and my EP5.

I captured the white balance for the IR shots and in-camera processed the resulting photos into B&W with my custom B&W Custom Mode.

I think they turned out quite good.

These sets are from the same raw. The first one is using my custom preset and the second is where I tweaked the preset.

With this one, I set the camera to the Dramatic Art Filter and took the image with the IR filter in place. I then processed the resulting jpeg file which gives a Dramatic Tone IR image.

1st one is the embedded jpeg, the 2nd is processed from the raw file and the 3rd one is processed from the resulting jpeg – interesting effect.

So, what do you think?

Re: IR photography with in-camera processing

Hi Allen, I think the results are "interesting".

Using an IR filter in front of an unmodified camera is sort of like driving a car on a freezing day with heaters on full blast and windows down...

But, it's also good to give you an idea of the potential you get with a camera that has it's IR cut filter removed. Over the years, I find myself going back to IR regularly, and if you do too, consider modifying a camera, perhaps an older one you don't use as much (like I have done with my first MFT cam, an Oly E-PM2).

Quick example from this past weekend.

Re: IR photography with in-camera processing

I like it. Granted, I too know very little about IR photography so I'm not sure if my opinion counts very much but isn't fun?

I'm planning on taking my IR filter for all my future travels. I'm not committed enough to take an IR converted camera, but I have a room for a filter in my camera bag and it gets good enough results for my needs.
