Canon 1000D Reduced Raw File Size

I have recently been playing with my older Canon XS/1000D and have been shooting in Raw+jpeg. Although the jpeg pictures are the correct size (3888 x 2592), the Raw picture size is only 1936 x 1288 in some picture viewers, such as Irfanview, but is normal in DPP.

Is that normal for an older Canon Raw format?

Not normal. 1936 x 1288 is the S (small) jpg size. RAW is always the full 3888 x 2592. Some bodies have smaller sized M-RAW and S-RAW choices, but not the XS/1000D. You're sure it's the xxxxx.CR2 file that has 1936 x 1288 size?

How are you viewing the RAW files? Perhaps your RAW software is defaulting to processing/displaying the full RAW file as 1936 x 1288 output?

The best way to know is to use DPP from Canon. Some “free” software doesn’t allow saving in full res. Or, I just looked at my 7D setup. I see that there are some choices for RAW file sizes (along with jpeg): full RAW, mRAW and sRAW. Make sure in your menus that you are using the full raw. I’ve seen resets not resetting everything.

The files do show full size and resolution in DPP.  The free Irfanview, even though it has a plug-in for Canon raw, displays the file at half size.  Irfanview displays the correct size for raw files from my 60D and 77D.

I guess the plug-in just doesn't work for the older Canon raw.

Could be, I use irfanview but usually, it is only for a quick view. But it is possible that the EXIF info on a raw file is wrong. I assume you have the very latest version of irfanview and plugins.

It is not only the exif data that shows the smaller resolution, but the picture itself displays at half size.

I have a recent version of Irfanview, but maybe not the latest.
