EOS M5 USB - sense check please

I've just replaced an M3 with a new to me M5, bought used in "excellent condition" from mpb.com. Only just started to play with it properly this weekend. Everything seemed to work fine until I plugged it into my macbook via USB and it isn't recognised at all.

Doesn't show up in finder, EOS utility doesn't recognise it, nor does image capture. It's not even recognised in the USB section of System Report.

I've tried connecting it to my iPad too just to rule out the mac and it's not recognised there either. I've used several cables too.

Before I raise the issue with mpb can I just check that I'm stating the obvious and doing this right?

I should be able to plug it in, turn it on and voila, it should show up just as my M3 did, yes?

EDIT: I've reset all of the camera's setting including wireless as I discovered some Canon DSLR's have an issue where the USB port doesn't work if wifi is enabled.

It's also running the most recent firmware.

I don't know MACs - can you try it in a PC of some sort? Have you tried a different cable?

I tried it on a new PC just now and when I switched it on, there was about a 5 second delay and it came up with 'setting up your Caonon M5'. Once done I could see it in File Explorer.

False alarm. I tried 3 cables - including the one that came with the camera, none of which worked.

Then I read somewhere that some Micro-USB cables are wired to charge only and not transmit data.

I remembered my IK Multimedia iRig HD2 interface has Micro-USB so tried that and it works!

I admit to feeling a little foolish now, but I'll leave the thread in place for others to find if they run into a similar problem.
