Re: Canon 450D

Wow...cool...nice one!  Did you take that with the Canon 100mm macro lens?

Yes, in 2009.

Great shot.  This was my first DSLR.  I still have it today and have been shooting with it again in the last few days.

Really like that image,  especially since I've never done much close-up/macro photography. Also, the 450D (XSI here) was my first DSLR, purchased soon after it was first available in April 2008. What a revelation it was.

Re: Canon 450D

Yup - I've just pulled the trigger on an as new 450D. Couldn't help it

It was the first real DSLR I encountered and looking back at the pics I took I realise that - whilst the pictures themselves may be rubbish - the colour balance is always good, exposure nearly always right and still got that Canon Magic look.

The 450D was my first DSLR as well. I think I got it in 2009. The fact that the kit lens had image stabilization was what made me think it was time to get my first DSLR. Looking back at the old pictures the raw files still hold up extremely well and with modern software the image quality is even more wonderful, IMHO.

Awesome little beasty!

The 450D was my first “serious” digital camera in 2009 and still gets use now. In fact I used it last week and got a double page spread published in the local paper https://www.theargus.co.uk/news/18737110.frolics-fun-saltdean-lido-dog-swim-goes-ahead/ and another photo taken with that camera is going in a local calendar for 2021!

It just goes to show that you don't always need the latest and best to get great pics - well done!

Back in November 2013 a friend lent me a 450D and kit lenses to see how I got on with a DSLR. At the time I only had a sketchy idea of what all the settings did and so the pictures were a bit of a mixed bag. This was number 46 that I took that day.

This was my first SLR as well and I still have it (I will never sell it).  It works fine and I have some amazing shots saved from it.  I shoot Jpeg so I was very good with using the right picture style setting for what I was looking to achieve.  Unfortunately now since not shooting for a while and getting back into things, my skills with jpegs and pictures style settings have diminished.

Re: Canon 450D

OK - well my 'new' 450D turned arrived - connected up to Eosinfo and it shows a shutter count of 4868. Physically it is immaculate and has obviously led a very sheltered life!

It's smaller and lighter than I remember - but that's going to be the case after 30D and 40D bodies with a 17-85 I guess.

Looking forward to some good weather to get out and give it a whirl!

Feel free to practice indoors.  I do.  You can get some very artistic shots of regular things around the home like food or a jar on the table.

350D or Rebel XT here, it was a game-changer for me.  A whopping 8mp's iirc which in most cases is good enough.

I still use that camera for landscapes because I can’t find a better lens than the 10-22mm (I shoot micro 4/3 now otherwise).

Try Sigma 8-16 you’ll be surprised

Re: Canon 450D

I've been looking at the 10-18 as a good choice for this type of work - tends to be a bit more affordable.

What I have noticed since going back to the 450D is that the standard 18-55 really does wash out the colours more than I remembered. The 17-85 does a whole lot better.

I’ve seen 10-22 advertised for a few hundred (maybe refurbished from canon)....I bought it early on, paid $700 I think.

It’s still my most expensive lens....reasonable weight for what it is.  I recall sigma and rocking had faster but much heavier super wide zooms back then.  What I like is that it controls flare much better than my m43 lenses and reviews of other lenses don’t impress me.  Seems the sensor stack is the cause, not the lenses.  Newer Panasonic bodies are better in this regard.
