EOS M100 IR full spectrum offer
1

Hello,

I am thinking of an EOS M100 for IR Photography as a second body. I`m looking the whole time for a used one. Now I found an offer of an EOS M100 which has been modified for full spectrum for 350 €. Usually the service here in Germany is 250 €. That makes the camera 100 €.

I`m texting with the seller of the camera. It is just the third camera he modified but has example pictures. I was asking him a lot of questions. One was about removing the existing filter and replacing it with one that passes the light from UV to IR. He said that it is not necessary with a M100. But what I read so far is, that the filter needs to be replaced and the autofocus needs to be adjusted again.

For me it feels a little bit of a risk. But the seller seems trustworthy and the price is incredible good. Would you buy it? I feel a little bit insecure.

Why would a mirrorless need autofocus adjusted?  The focus is automatically on the sensor, no?

OK, so what I read was then about modifying a dslr for a full spectrum, I guess.

Some background information here; http://www.astronomiser.co.uk/filters.htm. Andy Ellis' work is very good and a lot less expensive than you've been quoted.

Basically you can do a full spectrum mod by getting rid of the UV/IR cut & colour correction filter and the UV/IR cut & anti-aliasing filter, then shimming the sensor to compensate.  That loses the self-cleaning mechanism as it's part of the anti-aliasing filter.

AF doesn't need to be adjusted.

if he's selling it as a full spectrum, then it would pass UV. usually when this is done, it's just a piece of glass that they put in front of the sensor atypically with the same characteristics as the filter stack that was there before so that wide angle lenses still function as normal.

do you actually want to do UV photography? it's a bit tricky.

usually you get full spectrum so that you can shoot all the IR filters (ie: 590, 720, 850nm,etc) and also color. also can be used for astrophotography as well.  UV photography is usually an afterthought.

As I understood him so far he didn't replace the filter with any glass. He only took it out. Can this have a negative side effect? Maybe for dust on the sensor?

no, usually they put in a clear piece of glass to protect the sensor.

I doubt very much he just took everything off and left it like that.

That`s what he said. Well, I will find out how it performs, when the camera arrives in a few days.

I have an original M converted to IR,and in all my research beforehand I found that during the conversion one should replace anything they remove with clear glass that is the same thickness of the filters they removed.  From what I read, it can indeed have a negative effect if you don't.

With the camera also came the parts he removed and didn`t replace. The filter and the sensor cleaner. The camera was working but I had issues with the focus. The camera wasn`t able to lock focus on objects that were more far away as about one meter. Everything close worked. Gladfully the seller accepted that I can return the camera and get my money back.

Probably because he didn't replace the filter - that will effectively change the optical path.

yeah strange that he would not place an optical glass filter in front of the filter, but it certainly sounds like he did something wrong.

Hello everybody,

finally I have my IR M100. I found a used one for a price that was reasonable for me. Fortunately the guy who is offering the modding service had a 10% discount. Today the camera arrived at my workplace and I finished two hours earlier to go to the nearby park.  I only took pictures with the B+W F-Pro 092 filter mounted on the 22 mm lens which allows light of 695 nm and more to pass. Now I consider buying a second 22 mm pancake, because swapping lenses is faster than changing filters. I also have the B+W F-Pro 093. Now I`m done with my first post processing. I used darktable for it. I think there is still room to improve but I`m happy everything is working as it should. Here are two results.

So excited to get full spectrum conversion eos m100 for birthday next week. Can you tell me how you got these shots / settings / filters so can hit the ground running please and tweak to make my own. Cannot find many videos to help. Have the 22mm for m6 mkii so will get filters for that one. Also any problems with AF. Custom WB? Great pics. Exactly kind of photo I am aiming for. Have PS but beginner so may have a few hours tutorials ahead of me. Are you still using it or was it a flash in the pan?

A good place to start is the website of the service that is doing your conversion, they usually have good examples and tips.  From there, start experimenting!

Rob Shea on YouTube has some great IR videos and is one of the few who consistently produces videos related to IR.

does the 22mm lens have any hot spot issue?  have you tried the kit lens (15-45mm) and, if so, any hot spot problem ?

I just converted an M200 to full spectrum (got it yesterday) and have started experimenting with my lenses and a Hoya R72 filter. I have most EF-M lenses (22, 32, 18-45, 18-150, 55-200), the Sigma 16 and 56, EF-S 55-250 IS STM, Rokinon 12mm f2 and EF 135mm f2 lenses.

I'll report back in a few days... I intend to shoot in different lighting, with bright sky light around and so on to see how bad flare and hot spots might be at different apertures.

I tested all my lenses with IR this morning. The 22mm f2 lens was a great lens in IR!

I posted a verbal summary of my results in a new thread:
