Does Sony Own Or Pay Adobe??

The reason why I'm asking this is because lately I have been testing out a few other camera brands and you all know that I'm also not pleased with Fuji's existing skin tones. I have been messing around with a handful files from Nikon, Panasonic and Nikon FF.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl454B7R3GE

The images from my Fuji XT1 still remain in tact and they still look great as usual, as well as my X10 images and I also shot with the S5 Pro for a few years and everything was fine and dandy but since I purchased the XH1 a few years ago and used that some time things went down the drain for me and I stopped liking Fuji's skin tones. I have been using LR all along.

But then recently I started messing around with the Sony A7RIV and the skin tones and over all IQ look freacking amazing and natural with minimal PP and no matter what I do with the Panasonic images they look out of wack. Seriously, no matter what I adjust the images look weird and unnatural. The one that also works pretty good is actually the Nikon but (to me) the Sony wind hands down.

Is this a coincidence or what???

Is there some kind of conspiracy going here? I mean, I never had this problem, at least my eyes, but as soon as I jumped into a more newer body starting with the XH1 more than a year ago, things started getting all weird on me.

I'm starting to have serious doubts now and I'm starting to maybe pin point it to Lightroom and I'm just being very honest here but I'm not happy right now

Maybe this should be in the Sony forum.

If you like the Sony skintones (first I ever heard somone liking them, Ever), then why not just stick with the Sony?

This reeks of flamebait...

I have good recall of the OP’s struggles with Fuji - skin tones are but one of a few more they had. This isn’t close to flame bait

Dude, Batdude, rent the Sony and then you will really see your skills at with and the cameras’ shortcomings. Please do it so you can release the pressure that you have building up inside l.

I haven't messed with A7R4 files much, but most Sony Lightroom profiles are all over the place and often (IMO) produce rather ugly yellow-green skin tones. Unlike the Sony profiles, I find the Adobe and camera matching Fuji profiles to typically be quite good. The approximated Fuji specific profiles usually very closely match the in-camera profiles.

Exactly which profiles are you using in Lightroom?

Is your monitor OK?

It's not especially difficult to create a custom RAW profile to closely match the look of one camera to another in Lightroom.

Here's the X-T2 and Sony A7III with reasonably well matched profiles. If you really want your Fuji files to match the look of the Sony, it's do-able, but most people prefer to go the other way.

Yeah I agree that’s the same exact impression I have as well that Sony colors suck.

This reeks of flamebait...

Why because you say so, or are starting it?  IMO this was disrespectful for you to say this.

Your name should be synonym with "Skintone"...😃 You have been relentless about this subject and have been testing new cameras for perfect imaginary skintone for as long as I can remember you. I have no doubt you will raise up with similar thread- Sony vs Nikon vs Canon vs Pentax vs Fujifilm vs Panasonic vs Spro5 vs Skintone- not long from from when this one dies out. You are simply one of a kind, 🤣

If you want to respond to the question at hand, fine.  However, this post basically makes it personal.  If you’re simply irritated by the question, have nothing of substance to add to the question being discussed, or feel that it’s been overplayed, then please just stay out of the discussion.  However, if you do have something to add to the topic at hand, then please feel free to participate.

This sort of post just adds zero value here and is borderline trolling.

Hi Jerry. Thanks for weighing in. However, dont you think we have had enough threads / discussion on this subject and X-Trans / worms?

Hi Jerry. Thanks for weighing in. However, dont you think we have had enough threads / discussion on this subject and X-Trans / worms?

I’m sure many folks are tiring of the topic, particularly those of us who’ve been hanging around the forum for years now. However, it’s not our job (or really anyone’s) to censor content simply because it’s been covered before. Keep in mind that the forum consists of people with widely varying experience (and time spent) with Fujifilm gear. So comments, questions, observations, etc. are going to be repeated a lot, as you know.

The best strategy is always to simply ignore posts that you feel are repetitive or not really of interest to you. Just remember that a photographer who bought his/her first Fujifilm body last week and tuned into the forum hoping for some help and advice might still find the discussion very helpful and informative. A little patience goes a long way.

And finally... as I mentioned, please address comments to the issue at hand, not the individual.  Even strong disagreement can be fine as long as it isn’t made personal (and remains civil).

The Sony A7Riv sample gallery has plenty of people photos.

What I notice is that the out-of-camera JPEGs are pretty good, but the ACR converted ones are very noisy and too yellow. Possibly you run noise reduction with LR but DPreview does not.

More research is needed... I run Linux so I do not have Lightroom. I'll try Darktable.

This has all the earmarks of a soon-to-be-locked thread, but I'm fascinated by it, though I can't afford an A7Riv.

Yes now I’m becoming more curious and would like to start looking into downloading some of those free software RAW converter trials to see how the files behave.  This is all for learning purposes as well because an A7RIV is waaaaaaaay out of my league as well and if I get one it could be in three years maybe.

Again, the camera I am kind of interested in is the cheaper 24MP Panasonic S1, not the Sony.

Maybe Lightroom is what has gone down the drain 😬

I posted this in reply to another thread, but it seems appropriate here: do you just use the default Fuji White Balance? I've always found those to tend a little toward green & yellow on Caucasian skin (the kind I usually shoot), and DPR also mentioned it in one of their reviews, so I tend to shoot with the white balance settings nudged towards red and blue a little. I usually like those results a lot.

let me just say that with all the existing cameras I'm currently using and which are several years old, I have zero issues with WB, and nothing else for that matter.  Is most of the newer cameras that I'm seeing poor color tone issues.

I also have Luminar installed in my PC and since I posted this thread I have been messing a little bit with it along with Lightroom and the output is indeed different and with the very little time I have spent with this, literately only a few minutes, I can see that Luminar produces a bit nicer tones.

What I am noticing is that Lightroom is more prejudice towards certain cameras I'm really not sure what the issue is and to be honest I'm kind of blaming Lightroom at this point.  Again, I would have to do a lot more testing of my own based on the way I PP.

The interesting thing is that as I said above, I have zero issues with my D4 and XT1 images in LR.  Really strange and annoying stuff.

I did quickie Lightroom edits on a few RAW images from the X-H1 sample gallery with my default Fuji profile. These aren't in the greatest light, and I did give the WB a little tweaking here and there where it was obviously off, but these basically look how they look and I think the skin tones are fairly decent, no?

I think he was saying X-H1 skin tones out of Lightroom are not to his liking? I was saying that A7Riv skin tones from ACR look bad to me. Regarding S1, too few lenses.

I just looked at all portraits in the A7Riv sample gallery. Even at low ISO the o-o-c JPEG skin tones are better, and at high ISO they are much better, mostly due to less noise.

Downloading one ARW (brunette in yellow dress) I was quickly able to exceed o-o-c JPEG quality using Darktable's filmic module and wavelet noise reduction. No sense posting results here, but it does prove the importance of noise reduction even with full-frame sensors. AFAIK they do not use ACR+NR in the sample galleries, and the practice of "raising shadows" just makes matters worse.

Maybe Lightroom is what has gone down the drain 😬

Lightroom has many options to improve X-H1 results, and alternate software is available.

You're good in the dark of the Lightroom, Erik. Those are all better than the out-of-camera equivalents in the sample gallery.

At high ISO Fuji apparently does a lot of noise reduction, which reduces sharpness. Whatever noise reduction you did, less so. Nothing wrong with white balance or skin tones, either way.

Thanks, with Lightroom, a RAW file and a little know-how you can get the color to look however you want it to look. Whether you want your Sony files to look like Fuji's or the other way around, you can do that. There's a lot more to Lightroom beyond the default import settings and the basic slider adjustments that most people never really learn to make the most of.

RAW files are not images at all, just raw sensor data that can be interpreted and processed in many different ways. Whatever beautiful or horrible color you are seeing in Lightroom, Capture One (or whatever) was applied to the colorless RAW file by that editor. If the files from one camera can have great color, the files from a different camera can have great color too.

Some custom import settings and a different color profile (or customizing your own)  will go a long way towards achieving better results in any editor.
