It will be the greatest stills/video camera ever and will be priced out of reach so it doesn't matter.

There has been a lot of discussion and speculation about the price. I thought this might summarize what some people, who are interested, are thinking.

Anyone not interested will not vote or reply.

interesting enough the Sony 7RIV in Australia is about $6400 AUD so maybe that will be the what R5 sells for here at least

we can do this all day and all night but canon is going to rely on its marketing department and chances are high that they have already decided on R5's price and just looking for the right opportunity to announce it! time to lay back and wait

You are disappointing a lot folks here that want the R5 for under 3k.

With COVID and everything, Canon should be giving away the cameras so folks can buy the RF glass.

It will be a sad day if they don't bring it out at $3499.95. The way the economy has been going it won't be a very exciting release otherwise.

Definitely. They should give it away free, and then give us cash back as a goodwill gesture.

They will sell it for what they think they can get.

I suspect they will take lessons from the A7iii and the Nikon D850. There were waiting lists for these for quite a while. No point in under pricing a product where you can not meet the demand.

With the mind numbing video specs and hype surrounding this camera it will be very interesting to see what Canons strategy will be.

If it really lives up to the hype which just personally I doubt then it will be at least 4700 choose your currency.

i believe it will not be crippled but simply not quite have the AF performance people on this forum crave... not going to be as good as 1dx3. 5 series have always been lower spec than 1 series for AF, sensor pixel quality, white balance, etc etc.
this would mean 3,500 at cheapest maybe even 3,999.

anyone expecting Canon to respond to market conditions and/or price this for them is dreaming. Nice dream but a dream.

Available for 3500 USD by Christmas

The MSRP is likely to be 4000 USD or even higher, but the camera will be available for 3500 USD by Christmas.

I don't like to predict gloom and doom, but considering the unemployment levels found today, and being reported as not recovering hugely over the next 6 months, I see the christmas season as a bust. Who do you think is going to have high levels of disposable income at that point? Not many I assure you. Let alone willingness to get into the seasonal credit card debt, knowing they are fortunate to be eating and hopefully paying their bills. Na I see the so called selling season as very in the bucket.

That means lower prices? Although we may start to see inflation with all this debt being thrown about.

Which more likely means significant price cutting will be in effect as manufacturers try to move all the inventory they can before the end of the year, even with the slimmest of profit margins.

As sad as this is to say, I think the kinds of people who can afford a $3500 camera body and four figure lenses probably won't be that affected.

It's only sad if we are still thinking of PRE COVID days.

The market contraction has accelerated with COVID. Whatever plans Canon had pre COVID is not the same as post.

Canon options

  • Canon can stick to the original plan and hope the numbers are still as predicted. I doubt it (Last financial report had no guidance so plans have changed)
  • Increase the price to cover the drop in units sold.
  • Reduce the price and hope these bargain hunters will also buy RF glass to offset the loss in profit.

Canon is in a pickle. Announced a camera at the worst time. Customers are waiting. Do they make customers happy or shareholders happy.

Just my opinion, but I dont think that Canon will have have enough inventory to do option 3.

My guess, is that they will sell out for months, even if its $4500.

that is the reason why i am thinking canon will delay the official introduction of R5 and won't be out for sale anytime soon! we are looking at sometimes around 2021 at the soonest. unemployed people have other priorities to take care of, not an expensive camera!

The numbers are bad, however, its actually not that bad to be unemployed until July 31st.

In my state, you can get $400 a week on unemployment from the state + $600 a week from Federal govt until July 31st.   That adjusts to a 52K/year job, which is more than a lot of people make while working.

So if you are unemployed or had your wages reduced, I strongly suggest looking at unemployment.
