That is all solid and reasonable feedback. I have a G9, and GAS makes me look at the Oly, but each time I think of the EVF trade down, combined with having the Nocticron and PL 200 for dual IS and I realize I need to wait for a bigger step up before really giving in to GAS.

I don t want to single you out as many people on these forums seem to have this GAS syndrome but in your case I am wondering what kind of improvement in your pictures you think you would get by getting another body with the same sensor size but completely different ergonomics

For those of you who have both great equipment  and extra cash , I think you would be waaasy better off using the money for a special travel photo trip where you can get great pictures and get better at mastering the camera stuff you ALREADY have

At least consider it

well the G9 EVF has the option to be set at 120FPS

I would think so too . Epson if I had to guess

I do birding, and better AF would be the main thing I want, and so far, nothing in M43 world would give it.

sorry can t help you. Not sure what you photograph but I rarely use CAF

I am very satisfied with G9 autofocus . works perfectly and quickly 99% of the time at normal distances and I use focus peaking when shooting macro

Returned Cameras...

Funny Valentine wrote:

Please make sure you order just one. Because if you order both and return one you will ruin a new camera for someone else. Returned cameras are packed again and sold to someone else who's paying full price for a used camera. Pure evil.

Funny V,

Back in the day when there were so many NYc camera stores, B and H and Addorama among them.... You couldn't just return a camera because you didn't like it or it wasn't enough of a leap better than previous model / didn't meet your expectations. You needed a return authorization, and you only got that if something didn't work.

All of this crazy stuff where you have a window to try it out should force you to pay at least a 10 % restocking fee. This 10 % can then be given to the next buyer to entice an "open box" sale.

NY stores back then we're not helpful in selecting equipment, at least not on the phone. You had to know what you wanted.

It really wasn't ethical to go to a real local camera store (hardly any left) and waste their time with questions for 30 or 40 min when you were going to buy it from NY anyway.

I consider going to Best Buy type situation ok because there's no point asking questions and your just going ergonomics on your own.

Times have changed. There wasn't as much GAS then, or switching out of systems.

Two local stores I went to that are long gone. One also did lottsa professional and industrial processing in addition to sales. Only sold Nikon. But both stores called Canon the whore of the industry...

Best Regards,

Bernard

Quick update.

  • The grip is fantastic. I was worried it might be a tad bit less comfy than for most because of my huge hands. But no, it is wonderful to hold and handle.

There is a grip that comes in red, blue or black.

Shown here recently in a thread. Folds out for your pinkey to rest on. Had opening for battery.

Might help those with big mitts be more comfortable.

  • I haven’t had a flip out screen since a Canon powershot 12y ago. Personally I don’t care for it and I was surprised to find that it annoys me that I cannot flip up the screen easily. No biggie though.

Agreed, the FAS seem more exposed to potential Murphy's Law situations.

  • shame that Oly doesn’t have more/better body and animal detect stuff in. I do hope they will add this via FW.

Sure they will.

Good Luck,

Bernard

That’s not a universal truth. The store I buy from (https://www.digitec.ch/) takes a minimum of 10% for restocking if the item has been opened (item 3 of their return policy) and then explicitly lists the item as refurbished when they sell it again

Spider,

I just saw your response after I typed mine below stream.  I agree there should be a penalty for trial, but an Oly refurb supposedly gets a 100 % reinspection.  The items leaving factory don't get everything 100%.  Statistics ...

So that to me is difference between open box and refurb.  When A store like Camera was selling Nikon refurb D3 cameras (about 7 years ago?)

They had replaced the shutter.  I'm sure they didn't look pristine but you got a warranty and paperwork from Nikon.

Best Regards,

Bernard.

Re: G9 or EM1iii? Who has both?

A thorough summary. If you're new to the E-M1 series spend an extended time with the C-AF settings to learn what they do and how to tweak them for different subjects and settings. Default settings work pretty well but benefit from adjustments for birding, sports, aviation, racing, etc.

Good luck!

  • size and weight are fantastic. It’s feels far closer to the GX9 than I would have guessed and noticeably more compact and light than the G9. For me, this mattered, I’m not saying the G9 is “heavy”.
  • The grip is fantastic. I was worried it might be a tad bit less comfy than for most because of my huge hands. But no, it is wonderful to hold and handle.

  • The camera works and handles beautifully well with the PL 50-200. I have no doubt that dual IS on the G9 would be even better. But for me it’s plenty good enough with body or lens only.
  • AF is far far better than GX9
  • CAF in photography still doesn’t blow me away though
  • shame that Oly doesn’t have more/better body and animal detect stuff in. I do hope they will add this via FW.

Honestly, the only disappointment really is just the EVF. It’s perfectly fine to work with. But compared to the S1 it’s just a joke. What a pity, otherwise it’s a near perfect camera really

I’m still obviously discovering and learning and I’m still getting used to Oly colors. Feels a hit more flat SOOC than Lumix but I’m not sure how much of that is just what I’m used to after so many years just on Panasonic.

That is all solid and reasonable feedback. I have a G9, and GAS makes me look at the Oly, but each time I think of the EVF trade down, combined with having the Nocticron and PL 200 for dual IS and I realize I need to wait for a bigger step up before really giving in to GAS.

Some people, including engineers at olympus prefer having constant 120 fps over higher resolution EVF. I think they have their valid technical reasons beside economics to keep the same LCD EVF.

Having tried the eos R and Nikon Z6's EVFs, I can tell that I will stick with my em1.2's EVF until high resolution EVF's can keep up their refresh rate. The eos R and Z6 EVFs have that jumpy feeling when panning because they're only at 60 fps and drop down further in CAF and there's also a noticeable lag. Not sure about the G9, Haven't tried one extensively, but it seems the OLED panel is identical to those of the Canon and Nikon but with different pincushion optics. It's maybe even the same supplier who makes those 3 million dots OLED panels.

It’s hard to say because the S1 shoots far far slower in CAF than the Oly. I think it’s 6 FPS. At that rate at least I have zero issues and I always have that EVF at 120 Hz.

I am not joking, the difference between EVFs is bananas big. The S1 EVF is just plain amazing. Great colors, no distortion, great resolution and 120 Hz option.

I’ve read the argument from Oly. Maybe they couldn’t source one at a price that worked for them.

as said: it’s no deal breaker because you can work really well with the Oly. But both dynamic range and colors make it hard to judge a lot of situation well and it’s just less of a pleasure to use.

Quick follow up on this since I got the em1iii:

  • Video works great. I don’t care about 4K but FHD at /60p is really good.
  • CAF in video is fantastic. Much much better than on my S1.

could you elaborate on the comparison with your S1?

I actually think I will use this one much more for casual video than i would have expected

I am thinking about getting Oly for video because of its AF, even though it is Pana which is considered to be "videocentric".

Basically if the Oly locks on, it stays on. No wobble, no focus loss. only thing I find is that the Oly locks on to faces later and not when further away. And there is no body detect. But still it judges the scene well without any wobbling. I found the GX9 almost useless with CAF in video.
the S1 is fine but not 100%

I am really no video shooter and mostly don’t know what I’m doing there, so please consider this the impression of someone who presses that red button to film the kids.

I also don’t care zilch about 4K60p or VLog etc.  YMMV...

Yes, I am finding that out even if the first couple of uses! Part of the fun discovering the Olympus. Any good resources to read/watch you can recommend? I’ll probably open an Oly newbie question thread at some point but I want to collect some stuff first.

You make it sound like DFD is wildly flying around everywhere, with no regard whatsoever as to where the subject is...

On the G9, using AFC, to my eyes the so-called "wobble" looks more like the image is shimmering very slightly, almost as if there's a bit of heat distortion in the atmosphere. It does not interfere with achieving focus on the subject. And yes, I have my EVF set to 120fps refresh.

More of an issue than the "wobble" for me is VF blackout between frames when AFC with Live View is used. It takes some practice to smoothly pan the camera and anticipate where the subject will be when the blackout ends. This is not the case when the 20FPS frame rate is selected, as the EVF refreshes fast enough and without blackout to almost look like a continuous view; but the tradeoff there is potential rolling-shutter effects.

Examples of what the G9 can do using AFC can be seen here: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63905944
