Canon SL1 Replacement?
1

First, I shoot for myself and family, but I like quality pics. I will shoot 50 pics and throw out 48 of them (I'm sure many here do the same). I have did some shooting for broadcast TV, but here lately that involves my DJI drone, not pics. I shoot a lot of pics per month.

I have a Canon SL1 with Canon EFS IS STM 18-135 lens that I use most of the time, a 18-55 kit lens (someplace... not sure where), Canon EFS IS STM 55-250, Sigma DC OS Gold 18-250 and a Yongnuo 50mm f1.8 lens (for low light... but I think I should get the Canon equiv of this.... AF is SLOOOOW).

It's still in perfect condition and looks new and so do all my lenses (I take care of my stuff), but I'm ready to upgrade to something more modern.

I use this camera for pictures only. No video. I have a nice Panasonic FZ2500 for video.

So ideas? Do I simply move to the SL3? When I look at the SL3 on the studio test scene, the African American male looks sort of yellowish, vs any other Canon. He looks the correct color with the T7i and RF. I'm concerned with the color. Anyone have one and does it have a color issue?

I'm looking for newer features... better AF, newer processor, few more AF points. I like sharp pictures, that means a lot to me. I shoot 16x9 only. I take all my photos and make music videos with them... usually the length of a song. My Wife and kids enjoy watching them vs just looking at the pics. Used to be all 1080P, but these days I've started moving to 4k, but any camera 16MP or higher should be fine.

I hate to loose all my lenses. I do like the look of the pictures taken by the FujiFilm T30 and the Canon RF, but here again, I will either have to suffer through using a metabones or start replacing lenses. I love shooting low light pics. I'l sit out in my backyard at 2am with a remote shooting long exposure shots. My thought of a FF is because of how well they work in low light (or that's my understanding).

I can't find much about the Canon EOS T8i. I couldn't even find a price at Amazon, only at Canon.com. Any idea what additional features I would be getting vs the SL3? or the T7i?

So here is what I've been thinking about. Purchase time... any day. Options I've looked at: Canon SL3, Canon T7i, Canon T8i, Canon RF, Sony A7 II, FujiFilm T30 and finally the Panasonic G85 (the pics look great and really sharp).

I have to admit, as I get older I find myself using the scene modes, specially the night hand held mode. This is what has held me off of the Panny G85... zero scene modes. My SL1 Scene modes have saved me many pictures, specially the mode that takes 4 pics and combines them... although if I had the Canon 50mm 1.8 I probably wouldn't need these modes.

Ok, a lot of info. I'm looking for thought's, ideas, complaints, why and what you think. After looking so much and reading reviews here, I'm getting over saturated and now not sure what to do. Any comments and pics from any of these camera's would be great.

Thank you very much for taking time to reply.

Re: Canon SL1 Replacement?

I forgot to mention. I use all the modes on my SL1. Everything from Auto (very seldom... usually Program) to Manual... plus the other modes. To me, it's all part of the SLR experience. I use my SL1 because it's fun or I would just use my iPhone 11... it does a pretty good job.

Thanks

Why not the 90d?
It will use all your current lenses, and has the best tech yet that Canon has put into the APS-c platform...

I was going to say the same. Check out what the 90D does at my flikr page, but here's a taste from today.. Capturing a quail is complicated because first you need to "capture" it and then your lens/sensor has to make sense of all the detail.. I finally captured one today where the head is not blurry (where the single eyebrow is).. and etc.

Re: Canon SL1 Replacement?

Thanks for the picture. Love the quality of the 90D, but it’s just so big. I would rather have a T8i since it’s a bit smaller but I can’t find them anyplace. Even Canon.com they are back ordered.

Re: Canon SL1 Replacement?

So, why not get a T7i?  I don't know how much difference there is between them.

Re: Canon SL1 Replacement?

Per the test scenes here at dpreview, big difference in picture quality. The T8i is supposed to be the 90D killer because it is basically the same camera but smaller and lighter... or thats what Ive read.

Re: Canon SL1 Replacement?

The Canon T8i has the smaller sensor but the digic image processor number is the same (#8).  Have you checked the reviews or youtube?

Can you point me to what you read that the t8i is a 90D killer? The 90D is running what many consider to be one of Canon's best sensors.  I really liked my t7i.... very good .. in fact, excellent image quality.. But the 90D is "excellenter"

Re: Canon SL1 Replacement?

Zach Mayfield has a youtube video about the Canon 90D killer. Yep, it's time to upgrade from the Canon 90D to the Canon T8i (850D) camera. Nope, I'm kidding. He basically said that the Canon T8i (850D) is excellent for the price. So 90D killer might be said that way, because it's a high value camera. But the Canon 90D still appears to be better if a person wants to spend the extra money. He also mentioned that the production of cameras may have slowed because of the pandemic and some of these won't be available for a while. Go check out his video.
