Extending the EX1
3

It's been a few years now since I moved to M43 and ILC. But my dear old EX1s have not been relegated to a dark cupboard. My mate's granddaughters both use them when we go off taking pictures, and the older one (now 10) has produced some quite impressive shots with the one that she uses.

I also carry one of them if I go out and don't want to carry a camera, but want to have one in my pocket in case I need it. Or perhaps I want a good close-up shot of some flowers etc, and that cracking Schneider-Kreuznach lens reminds me that it is a match for any of my M32 lenses.

Recently, on a whim, I bought one of those screw on the front, teleconverters to try with my Panasonic 45-175 lens. It doesn't work at all, but I had a nice surprise when I found that it works well at the long end of S-K lens on the EX1. Here's my mate demonstrating its use.

Anyway, my EX1s live on, and still rank as one of the best cameras that I have used. Now if only S-K made lenses for M43!

I still use my EX1. I like the Amoled display, the flip out screen, and the S-K lens. Also the simple menu layout. It does have a tendency to over expose.

It's especially impressive in close ups.

What is the attachment you've bought?

This almost happened...

...but alas, it was not to be.

Great picture, by the way!

Re: Extending the EX1

Do you happen to know whether S-K made lenses for any other cameras? I've been very impressed with the one on my EX1.

Yes – the company has produced lenses for lots of cameras (and enlargers) over many decades, and most of them are listed here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schneider_Kreuznach

Some highlights from the earlier days of SLRs were the PA-Curtagon 35mm f/4 shift lens, Variogon 45-100mm f/2.8 and 80-240mm f/4, etc. The list isn't up to date in that the Schneider-branded lenses for Samsung GX DSLRs aren't included (these were probably re-labelled Pentax optics anyway).

Many thanks. I knew about large format but not many of the others listed. M42 would suit me because I still use Asahi lenses on Pentax with adapter. Also Leitz R.

A shop here in Melbourne was still stocking the EX1 wide angle converter which I've just bought.

Also another quite close by had an EX2 F second hand, which is on the way, more as a collector's item I think. Although I did read about it being a hidden gem!

It's a Canon TC-DC58N. No good at the shorter focal lengths but works OK at 'full stretch'.

I also rate the EX1 great for close ups.

I keep telling myself "no more legacy glass" but if I see a S-K at a good price, I will make an exception.

Thanks. But how sad that S-K didn't go through with lenses for the M43 range.

I've just got an EX2F, so that gives me a different S-K lens.

It's a pity that the wifi function doesn't work. Outdated I guess. But otherwise a really nice camera.

I'm still plugging along with my EX1. The articulating screen and the fact that it fits in my pocket keep me from moving on. I shoot pretty much exclusively at ISO 80 to get the most out of it.

The EX2F shares all the features that you like in the EX1. In addition it's slightly smaller. As I said, the wifi function doesn't work with the only Samsung Mobilelink app I can find, I think because the latter post dates the camera.

What i like best about both cameras is the IQ. There are lots of compacts on the market that are as small, or smaller but fall down in this respect.

You may be able to get the app to work with a bit of fiddling.

I've downloaded the right MobileLink app for a MAC tablet, and can connect the camera but get a message 'A camera that is not compatible with the current application has been connected'.

I think the problem is that the app is later than the camera.

Can you suggest any fiddles, please?

Re: Extending the EX1

I always said that an EX1/2 with a 1 inch sensor would be a great camera to own, and now Sony have come very close with the ZV-1.

I like the look of the zv-1. But no flash, no evf, no mode dial...

I think its target audience is...not me.

No mode dial? Offsetting the other two are AMOLED display, flip out screen, very simple menu layout, fast lenses and, most important, IQ

Mode button is better than the dial I accept that.

But the lens is the same as the rx100 mark 4 which I have. I don't care for the amoled display or the flip out screen and I'm used to the menu layout.

I would be interested in the much improved AF compared to the mark 4 but I would be reluctant to give up the evf and flash.

Just my opinion. I'm sure this camera would be perfect for a lot of people.

I've not seen one and didn't realise that Sony use Schneider lenses.
