Sigma SD 14/15 IR dust filter sub.

I own SD15 and unfortunately broke ir dust filter,  been searching for a replacement and I'm afraid there will never be any made.

I'm thinking my only option is to find the exact optical formula as original or possibly find a filter I can screw on the lens.

If anyone has any opinions or experience with this,  I appreciate any input.

I am shooting an SD15 without the dust cover. To shoot visible light, I put a visible light filter the lens. It gives a light blue cast so Custom WB is best.

If you live in USA I can send you a Schott BG38 77mm filter which works quite well. PM if interested.

I have a Kolari Hot Filter which is almost exactly the same as the native Quattro filter.  Are you sure the filter in your camera is different from that in the SD1?  SD1 replacement filters are now available from Sigma USA.  Finally you may be able to get the filter repaired by Kolari again in the USA.

I also have the Kolari, Mike, but it is nothing like the SD1/14/15 filter (spectral transmission). The Kolari is optical glass with a slight blue cast but the Sigma filter is sharp cut-off (dichroic).

Are you sure the filter in your camera is different from that in the SD1?

I seem to recall it being said here that the SD1 filter was different to either the SD14 or the SD15 ...

... but I doubt that any difference would be significantly noticeable on the SD15.

Finally you may be able to get the filter repaired by Kolari again in the USA.

So they can do thin dichroic filters?

Re: Sigma SD 14/15 IR dust filter sub.

Yes don't buy a SD1M filter. It covers a, APSc 1.5 crop sensor and is different than the 1.7x crop ones used in the SD14 and SD15 cameras.

The closest you will find to the Sigma is a BW 486 filter that is affordable. Also available in many different sizes.

The closest filter you can buy is the Baader UV/IR cut filter. That matches almost perfectly. But it only comes as a 2", 48mm thread filter and its very expensive.

If your lucky, the production quality varies, the SvBony UV/IR cuts I have also match. I ordered 4, 3 match like the Baader, one doesn't. It allows slightly more IR. These are really cheap. I got mine in 1.25" size though.

Re: Sigma SD 14/15 IR dust filter sub.

This shows the vast differences in UV/IR cut filters, aka Hot Mirrors....
Sigma is usually about 420nm - 680nm.....It is more like the red on the left & between the green & the violet on the right......

Re: Sigma SD 14/15 IR dust filter sub.

If anyone can they probably can but the operative word is "may".  They did do replacement sensor cover glass filters when users wanted better performance from Leica lenses on Sony.  They're easy to talk to just send them a mail.

My Kolari is the latest release as of Nov/Dec 2019 and it matches the color from the standard Quattro cutoff filter closely enough that I didn't see any difference at all and yes it does have blue colored glass.  IIRC the original Quattro is also dichroic but I'm going from memory on that.

I tried that filter but it is sensitive to angle and (surprise) gives a horrible green vignette at wide angles such as 17mm. Not recommended.

Not a bad option if you kept the frame. I think you need a 32mm or 33mm filter diameter. Just measure yours. When I broke my original SD14 filter I glued in a 830nm Lp filter. Its dark in the OVF, but allows IR for any lens. Didn't end up using it much though.

Don't use super glue, to glue in the new filter. It off gasses that will cloud many types of glass. Use a black 2 part epoxy mix. Like JB weld plastic bonder.

Mike

Just getting into this, due to plenty of spare time locked into the house.

Kolari makes two:
