the DP review Of the camera faults the viewfinder capabilities especially for sports
of course now I’m confused.

Those reviewers must find something “bad” to justify their jobs. Also, they tend to think that everyone want, and has the money, to buy a top-end 1D camera.

On the other hand, please remember that before Canon’s and Nikon’s current top DSLR APS-C cameras, many people have managed to capture sport actions quite nicely with inferior gear.

I suggest you go to YT and watch a few 90D reviews.

Great idea. Thanks

FYI on the 90D forum there is an argument about focus. It s pretty heated 🤷‍♂️🤔

Tell me about it. There used to be equally heated arguments regarding 7D II AF for months!

The more advanced/complex a piece of equipment is, the more experimentation will be required to master its features. It may take months of continuous usage in real-life scenarios. In the meantime, there are mistakes and misunderstandings. On top of that, certain eager users make assumptions and don’t study the manual.

very true

the one fact I wish I could nail down is the viewfinder focus

is it really poor for sports? That would be a bummer

If a person has been used to the sophisticated (and complex) AF performance of the 7D Mark II, they will be very critical of the 90D.

I cannot answer your question above as I don’t use a 90D nor do I shoot sports. In any event, it has never occurred to me, since replying to your first post of this thread, that such a question is the driving factor of your next purchase decision.

You are correct. I just like to shoot baseball so I focused on that item.
it was the one con in the DP review of the camera

of course I like the 1/8000 shutter. It will be a vast upgrade from my t4i

and from reading here an upgrade over the t8i

SL2 is the latest model of the Rebel SL APS-C line: SL1, SL2, SL3

T8i is the latest model of the Rebel T APS-C line: ... T3i, T4i, T5i, T6i, T6s, T7i, T8i

90D is the latest model of the xxD APS-C line: ... 40D, 50D, 60D, 70D, 77D, 80D, 90D

7D Mark II is the latest model of the 7D APS-C line: 7D, 7D Mark II

90D is not an upgrade over T8i, nor 7D Mark II. They are the latest models belonging to different product lines for different users and applications.

You are out of luck if you desire a camera that has T8i affordability, lightweight and ease of use, plus 90D 32MP sensor and other goodies, plus 7D II AF sophistication.

Thanks. I’m going to research

i like shooting baseball from the seats with a long lens

the lens is or more importance than the camera. Standard “long” lenses have slow (small) aperture that makes you use higher ISO in order to use a shutter speed fast enough for indoor basketball.

consider a 100 f/2 lens and crop the pics than use a longer small aperture lens

i assume this will help?

1/8000 will be of no use to you inside with a long lens. The only time you can use even 1/4000 is outside in bright sunshine with a f/1.4 lens!

It will be a vast upgrade from my t4i

you’ll be lucky to get 1/500 at iso 12800 inside

and from reading here an upgrade over the t8i

The backup battery in a camera (watch type battery) isn’t a rechargeable battery.

I don’t think this camera has that battery. If it does it’s not in the manual

I'm very happy for you.  I think that's an excellent choice.  You make me so "jealous",

I hope not.  Once you see the beautiful images, I'm sure that you will not look back.  I can see a big difference in quality between my older and newer Canon DSLR cameras.  I expect that you will too.
