Canon T4i has died - Repair or Replace (with what)?

Turned on my trusty T4i today. Got Err.70. Took out the battery as I was told.

Put the battery back in and it is dead. Won't turn on at all.

So. I own this camera, a 50mm 1.8 Lens a Tamron 17-35 mm lens and a 70-300mm lens (Canon)

What does the group think? Is it dead dead?

Does it make sense to repair an 8 year old camera?

If I get a new one should I get the latest Rebel, the next step up or a FF camera?

I am a causal shooter and video recorder.  I would like the camera to be better than me.

All thoughts and suggestions very welcome

thanks

Mark

After 8 years, no IMO. Even if you could, it would still remain a 8 years old camera. In eight years, there has been a big leap in image quality for newer cameras. I am stuck also with an old 7D and even my new iPhone beats it on colors!

Just to make sure, have you tried removing the CF (or SD??) card from it? Could be defective. Also, and I don’t think it applies for your camera but older cameras also had a CMOS battery. Don’t know from which model they made them non removable.

Regards,
There is always something to shoot/snap, you just have to know how to do it and have the right gear.

Re: Canon T4i has died - Repair or Replace (with what)?

It's time to get a new camera. The repair cost will be a few hundred dollars.

One option is the T7i - the body costs about USD 700.

The other options are 80D (USD 900) and T8i (USD 750, released soon).

Unless urgent, I would recommend waiting a few weeks and getting the new T8i.

Not urgent. What’s the improvement?
what about full frame?

what about full frame?

Not urgent. Budget is not a major concern. What about full frame?

The 5D Mark IV has come down in price. (It is quite good, but I never upgraded from my 5D Mark III, which is already better than I am. )

The 6D Mark II is very good and relatively light - I have been happily using one and would suggest that you ignore the random negatives on the web.

I would move one step farther: What about full-frame mirrorless?

I also use an EOS R and rate it roughly equal to the 6D Mark II. Highly recommended.

Keep in mind the extra money for new EF lenses (for 6D Mark II) or RF lenses (for R, although in this case you may adapt EF lenses via a Canon EF-RF mount adapter).

Best no-headache option.

What about DR?

Don't know - never been a limiting factor in my 19 years of digital photography.

Do you need IBIS too?

OP asked:
"what about full frame?"

EOS RP or EOS R.
If price is a consideration, buy from the Canon online refurbished store.

APS-c:
90d or 77d.

Re: Canon T4i has died - Repair or Replace (with what)?

IBIS is in body image stabilization.  If you want to save money, stay with Canon to use your existing lenses etc., I would suggest a Canon T7i or Canon 800D.  I bought two of them on Ebay recently for $505 (USD) each.  That camera works well with all of my existing lenses including the Tamron 150-600mm lens.  If you have more money, look at the Canon 90D or Canon 6D Mark II.  Buy more lenses as you need for them as Ashley has explained to you.  He has a lot of experience with them, full frame, mirrorless or crop cameras.

I’m thinking the T8i sounds cool.
I guess I’ll wait for reviews

I was going to say that. Some good deals can be found on refurbished cameras.

So what are the disadvantages of buying the T8i?

I miss Full Frame

What else? Do I miss a lot of Dynamic Range?

I need new lenses if I go FF

If you have been using Canon Rebel cameras, the T8i will be latest of the line. I see no disadvantages at all — except the fact you cannot buy one right now. (I currently have Rebel T6s and Rebel SL2. I really like using them and enjoy the images they produce.)

As I said, you will new EF lenses if you buy, say, a 6D Mark II. EF lenses may be mounted on Canon APS-C cameras, but EF-S lenses cannot be used on Canon FF cameras.

I have no problems with “lack of Dynamic Range” when shooting with SL2, T6i, 80D, 5D3, 6D2 and R. The so-called reviewers, who touch the new cameras for a day or two, make loud noises about this “issue” (which is a non-issue to me) — I focus on creating beautiful images and ignore them.

If you have personally been affected by DR limitations with Canon sensors, I would like to hear about your specific problems — maybe I or someone else in this forum can help address them.

In general, what you usually shoot and what you intend to do ultimately with your images will determine the camera suitable for you. “Full Frame” in a vacuum means little.

Re: Canon T4i has died - Repair or Replace (with what)?

After reading all the reviews and listening to people's opinions, why don't you buy both a crop and full frame camera? Or even mirrorless?  I've found that until we have first hand experience with the type of pictures that we take, we really don't know...at least that is what I have found for myself. So, dive in...take some chances...learn some more new things and then go from there. Everybody may not agree with me, but that is how I do things in general, that is learn by doing after doing some research.  I say that without knowing your budget limitations.  I would recommend listening to Ashley's advice, since he does have this first hand experience.

You can see some recent sample pictures from both my Canon T3i (600D) camera and the Canon T7i (800D) camera. Look at the ISO10000 and ISO12800 pictures.

The 80D sensor and those used in the latest Canon cameras are quite good, especially the 32MP sensors in the 90D and the EOS M6 Mark II. I think the new 24MP sensor T8i, plus the latest DIGIC processor, will be excellent, even better than the 80D sensor.

Please remember that your T4i is quite old now, so is my 7D which was “a big deal” for some years in the past.

For wide angles on APS-C, I find the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM quite good, albeit rather slow. It is a known fact that Canon’s EF-S and EF-M lenses are good, but not competitive.

In brief, if you stay with Canon, I suggest: T8i (for smallish expense) or 6D II plus some EF lenses (for bigger expense).

Good luck.
