The GX8 should've been branded its own class. It was much larger than the GF/GX cameras that came before it, not to mention the FAS.

I wouldn't care what they call it.

I think an update to the GX8 should be called ZS250/TZ250/TX25. It just makes sense.

Or how about calling it the LX150?

Maybe G-XL-2, and retroactively rename the GX8 the G-XL-1.  Retroactive renaming just might be the ultimate naming insanity.

Re: Apple doesn't use insane naming either

The G line has similar confusion.

G9 is not a successor to G7, but similar to GX8, is a premium line of product having capacity as powerful as the flagship GH5.

G85 indeed is the successor to G7 (similar to GX85 and GX7), and slightly more clear, to have G95 to continue the new naming scheme while GX falls back to GX9 immediately.

I guess the lines of G?? and G? would be kept, but GX8 would have been dropped and therefore Panny returned to use GX? for the GX line of product.

Indeed, it seems that GF has also came back to GF instead of GX??? from GF10. Might be the guy in Panny decided the product name during the GX8/GX85/GX850 time was fired 🤔.

Good point.  The GX8 should be redesignated the GX-XL-1, and the G9 should be the G-XL-1.

-Go back to the proper naming of the camera. In Japan it's the GX7 series, which has done well for Panasonic. So call it by it's rightful name, the GX7 MkIV.

Yes, the Panasonic naming is insane. My GX7II (here in Japan) is named GX85, GX80, etc. in other parts of the world. My TX1 (here in Japan) is named ZS100, TZ100, etc. in other parts of the world. Sony, Olympus, Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Ricoh, Fuji, Sigma, etc. don't do this.

I suspect Panasonic does this so that grey market consumer cameras are easily identified.

It is amusing that Sony, Olympus, Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Ricoh, Fuji, Sigma, etc. don't seem to be so concerned about this. Or maybe they have found another non-insane way?

Apple doesn't do the Panasonic style insane naming either for their products. I don't think Samsung does either, but I haven't checked. In fact, there are thousands of products that are sold in various countries around the world. Most seem to have the same name everywhere, but there may be a few exceptions.

Canon also uses different names for their consumer models in different regions. As fas a I know, they've been doing this much longer than Panasonic. Panasonic probably got the idea from Canon. I've never seen those models from Panasonic and Canon being sold in the UK by grey market vendors.

I'm not familiar with inner workings of the camera industry, but business to business fines are commonplace in the fashion industry. A lot of money is made behind the scenes through fines. Perhaps Panasonic and Canon are using this naming scheme to easily identify grey imports of consumers cameras so they can trace which region they came from, then impose heavy fines on the distributor for supplying retailers outside of their contracted region. It could be a good little earner! Who knows?!

Even Panasonic doesn't use insane naming all the time though: G9, GH5, GX8, LX100, S1, etc.

I guess it makes sense for Panasonic to keep the identity of the high end cameras consistent across regions, just like Canon does.

Actually, there is difference between the gx7 ii, gx80, gx85,etc etc, its the fps in 4k mode. 25fps or 30fps. So the firmware for each model must be different.

Its something to do with laws in different countries and ntsc vs pal.

And, or, maybe, the language of the menu system.

Cheers,

It's hard for me to see the point in releasing a GX10 if it isn't kept small. There are plenty of big m4/3 cameras for people to choose from, while the smaller bodies are generally low end and limited.

Agree, the whole point of the GX series, I thought, is to be the smaller, more nimble option. My main body is the G9, but I had a GX7 and have a GX9.

Are there any fans of the GX85/9 grip who'd miss if it they simply went back to the GX7 design?

Nope, the GX9 grip is a backward step from the GX7, IMHO. I like the camera, but find it odd to hold. That may be because I loved the GX7, and am comfortable with the bigger grip on the G9.

Even if they don't repeat the moronic battery blocking design of the current add-on grip, anything that screws to the bottom of the camera will inevitably add to its size. I use a 3rd party 3D printed grip on my GX9, but I'd rather it had a decent grip out of the box.

Can you provide a link to this grip?

Here's a link to the one I bought.

It adds to the height of the camera but it's very light weight. The one I received fits fine and has held up to a year or so of regular use. For me it definitely makes the GX9 much more secure and comfortable to hold.

You'll find some other similar 3D printed designs if you search for 'GX9 grip' on eBay. I've seen one where the base is shaped for arca swiss mount plate compatibility, but I haven't tried that myself.

Thanks - looks really interesting. That one doesn't ship to Australia, so I will look around a little as you say.

Hadn't really thought about 3D printing before, but it certainly could make things like custom l-brackets really affordable.

Thanks
