My GX7 MkIV (GX10) Wishlist
3

So we haven't heard anything about the rumored GX10 recently, with the last news of the camera being launched in the "1st half of 2020".

I'm assuming that the camera will be pushed back because of the current situations, but that's not stopping me from thinking what will Panasonic do? Will it be a incremental improvement, or will it be much more?

Here's my whishlist:

-Go back to the proper naming of the camera. In Japan it's the GX7 series, which has done well for Panasonic. So call it by it's rightful name, the GX7 MkIV.

-Size. Keep the body small. Having the size advantage could be a deciding factor if one were to look for a Rangefinder styled body. Fujifilm has the XPro series and the XE3 (even though it's rumored to be phased out) is just as small as the MkIII.

-Optional screw on grip, shaped like the original GX7 grip.

The GX7 was an amazing camera for Panasonic. The handling, the swivel evf, the tiltable veiwscreen, but it felt so good in the hand. Give us a screw on option, so that it even resembles a GX7. But please, let us be able to access the battery door.

-Weather Sealing.

You know this was coming. In fact, every camera should include weather sealing. These bodies are high tech, and need all the protection they can get.

-Tiltable Veiwscreen, please do not add a FAS. As a street shooter, one does not want to have something extend the size of the camera, we're trying to be quick and discreet.

-Shutter Speed/Exposure comp dial

-Styling of the original L1/GX7

The Original L1 to this day is a very stylish camera. I prefer performance over style, but I think Panasonic to a step back in the styling department. The L1 and the GX7 are 2 very good looking cameras and the MkIV should reflect that.

I know I'm missing more, but to the fans of the L1, GF1, GX1, GX7, GM series and more, what do you think?

Heh, just give it the GX7 grip!  Personally, I think screw-on grips, and cameras designed to need them, are dumb.  I know others feel differently.

-Shutter Speed/Exposure comp dial

Ugh.  Multi-purpose, customizable control dials please, not dedicated dials like the EC dial on the GX8 or GX9.

Give us a GX7 MK I with up to date shutter, stabilization, 20MP sensor, weather-resistant, better quality EVF even if it's the same size, and of course the other little updates that recent cameras have, to the extent they fit the GX7.

But I'd still rather have a true GX8 successor.

I would welcome that too, but having it being optional isn't bad either. If one wants extra hand holding or not.

Well we know dials will be a given.

The GX8 should've been branded its own class. It was much larger than the GF/GX cameras that came before it, not to mention the FAS.

It's hard for me to see the point in releasing a GX10 if it isn't kept small. There are plenty of big m4/3 cameras for people to choose from, while the smaller bodies are generally low end and limited.

Are there any fans of the GX85/9 grip who'd miss if it they simply went back to the GX7 design?

Even if they don't repeat the moronic battery blocking design of the current add-on grip, anything that screws to the bottom of the camera will inevitably add to its size. I use a 3rd party 3D printed grip on my GX9, but I'd rather it had a decent grip out of the box.

-Weather Sealing.

You know this was coming. In fact, every camera should include weather sealing. These bodies are high tech, and need all the protection they can get.

I can make do with a cover when I need to use my GX9 in the rain, but there are small weather sealed cameras so I don't think this is an unreasonable request.

-Tiltable Veiwscreen, please do not add a FAS. As a street shooter, one does not want to have something extend the size of the camera, we're trying to be quick and discreet.

I definitely wouldn't buy a GX10 if they afflicted it with a FAS. I bought a G9 last year but find the slow and awkward flip out screen really unpleasant and frustrating to use. The tilt screen is the primary reason why I like using the GX9 rather than my G9 or an Olympus body.

-Shutter Speed/Exposure comp dial

I'd be happy enough if the left the EC dial, but personally I don't understand the appeal of dedicated dials that can't be customised. I'd like to see the triple control setup from the G9, i.e. conventional front and rear dials with a customisable ring replacing the D-pad (to use for EC, ISO, flash comp. etc.)

I know I'm missing more, but to the fans of the L1, GF1, GX1, GX7, GM series and more, what do you think?

The main thing that I'd like the see improved with the GX10 is continuous AF. The G9's DFD AF isn't perfect, but it's far superior to the GX9 when shooting action or birds in flight. It's frustrating when I try to shoot more challenging subjects with my GX9 and find that most of the shots are out of focus and unusable.

A small tweak that would make a difference to me is adding extra custom modes to the mode dial. The GX7 had three C settings on its mode dial, allowing 5 in total to be used with the extra ones in the C3 menu. The GX9 just has the one dial position for 3 custom settings, and you have to use the menu or touch screen to choose which you want.

I'd also love for the GX10 to have a flash sync port like the G9 so that it's possible to work around Panasonic's crippled flash system. Or better yet they could fix it and remove pointless limitations like not being able to use flash when bracketing...

My gx10 wish

1. Auto wifi. Option when you turn the camera on it automatically starts up in wifi mode using the previous or stored settings for remote control, WITHOUT pressing a single button on the camera.

So i can quickly swap a powerbank.

2. Skip the dull black or silver. Make it camouflage realtree or grass pattern. That will shake things up.

That's a good one. Also a continuous transfer feed to your smartphone.

An olive colorway like apple recently did, or Leica would be nice. But Ill take a all matte black colorway, with the Branding LUMIX black as well.

Re: My GX7 MkIV (GX10) Wishlist

1. Lose the dedicated exp comp dial.

Panasonic hasn't leaned into the retro look like Fuji and the PEN-F and I think they should stay out of it. I love the ergonomics and function-first mantra of their cameras and I really want them to drop the exposure dial comp on the next iteration of the GX. Right now the GX9's exp comp dial is stiff and only good for +/- 3 stops. I prefer to use the command dial but that's in a slightly awkward position. In terms of ergonomics, the GX7 was so much better.

2. Improve the grip and use a BIGGER BATTERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The grip on the GX7 was perfect and they messed it up on the GX85 and 9. Go back to the original or, better yet, make it a bit bigger and use the same (bigger) battery as the G85/95. Or, even better, the same battery as the G9.

3. Improve the EVF but...only if it can be done without a significant size increase.

4. Keep the built-in flash.

5. Stick to the single-axis rear screen OR dual-axis but without a flip-out style.

For me, the camera's fantastic suitability for street photography comes down to its small size, fast start-up time (and power switch placement), fast S-AF, and that flip-up rear screen. And in some situations, the tilting EVF, so...

6. Keep the tilting EVF.

7. Add 3 Custom modes on the dial.

8. Add an additional customizable func button or switch.

9. Improve constant AF for video and still shooting.

10. Add highlight protection exposure mode like on the G9.

11. Add live composite shooting with raw file output.

12. MAKE THE REAR BUTTONS STICK OUT MORE!!!!!!!!!

13. Total fantasy: built-in Godox radio master flash controller.

14. 4k 60FPS.

15. Weather sealing is nice to have but it's not something I need.

16. Add Constant AF for video as one of the options for the Quick Menu.

17. Add Snap Focus as found on Ricoh GR cameras.

In Snap Focus mode, when you press the shutter release all the way down in one quick motion, the camera sets the lens's focus to a preset distance (specified by the photographer) and fires. But if you half-press first, it will AF, and then fire when you press the rest of the way. This is FANTASTIC for street shooting and would immediately make it that much more desirable as a street shooter.

18. Emulate Fuji's Classic Chrome colour setting.

  • A GX7 hand grip,
  • same position of back dial of GX7 (not where GX85 puts it),
  • internal of GX9 (20Mp 5-axis IBIS sensor without AA filter, the latest Panny menu, tiltable evf/LCD ( happy to have the same 16:9 evf as GX7 to keep GX7-IV small)),
  • OLED EVF as G85,
  • Live Composite of G95,
  • WR,
  • mic-in port if possible, and
  • a more energy efficient electronic inside or a bigger capacity new battery...
  • Take away that dedicated EC dial dial,

If OSPDAF would be used on top of DFD (I know it would be impossible for GX to have it before G/GH)... 🤔☹️

Totally forgot about the evf. An improvement is a must. They should give it the GX8 evf. They sell a clip on evf hood, so just make the eyecup bigger to fit the larger evf.

I'm a fan of dfd, they just need to improve it and it is getting better.

As soon as you add a large, GX8 class EVF to a GX7, you’ve got a GX8. Much of the slightly larger size of the GX8 (mainly a few mm taller) is due to the larger EVF. I have both and the difference really isn’t that great, but the GX8 is just a better handling camera with better external controls, except for that dedicated exposure compensation dial.

The GX7’s handgrip is great. I’d love to see that return in some form over those squarish grips.

This year, a GX8 Mark II is due, not another GX7. So, the GX10 just needs to be a GX8 with a G95 / G9 feature set… or a close as possible.

There's room for a small, mid-tier rangefinder, like the GX9 and a top-tier rangefinder like the GX8. Especially with the current 4-5 year refresh cycle, they could leap-frog upgrades.

GX10/GX8 Mark II … 2020.

GX9 / GX7 Mark IV …2022.

Panasonic offers 3 DSLR form factor cameras, yet somehow they all manage to stay in the catalogue and sell. Same with Oly's EM-series. So, why not 2 rangefinder form factor cameras, especially with a staggered refresh cycle? (I'd like to see a PEN-F Mark II, too!)

GX8 slightly taller and wider than GX7 to accommodate larger EVF.

Update everything else to today's standard.

Oh and would appreciate greatly if it's weather sealed.

And while I'm at it, updated the GX8 and GM1/5.

That's all, and thanks

Sorry for the crappy image, but this is how it looks. The GX8 is NOT that much bigger than a GX7. 10mm (.5") wider. 7mm (.375") taller. That's it.

A bigger EVF makes a GX7 a GX8.

If the monitors align, the GX7 actually has a slightly wider grip on the right side.

Mine - a REAL GX10 please
4

A REAL GX10 please , the GX9 was really a GX90 with some fluff added to make it appear like a real GX

Soooo I'd vote for bringing back a proper successor to the GX8 with the proper EVF , weathersealing, command dials (but swap that dedicated EV control for a programmable dial) , that Proper grip with the shutter button on it , 8000th sec Mech shutter, all the Func buttons etc - the bigger body ought to give us Full G9 IBIS too , Add a proper card slot (not in the battery door where its a pain) ..

Now the GX7 introduced IBIS to panasonic M43 line - Wouldn`t it be great to see them introduce state of the art PDAF focussing as a first with the GX10

Anyway, keep the small fiddly bodies for the GXxx line, single Digits ought to be top tier with all the stuff on like the GX8 was . That`s my vote anyway

Agree with everything except the much-maligned dedicated exposure comp dial. I love it. When going out, I like to just glance at the camera to see if I need to adjust some main parameters (would also love to have a dedicated ISO dial, BTW). The size of it is also ideal for frequent use.

Agree with everything except the much-maligned dedicated exposure comp dial. I love it. When going out, I like to just glance at the camera to see if I need to adjust some main parameters (would also love to have a dedicated ISO dial, BTW). The size of it is also ideal for frequent use.

I use the EC dial occasionally, but would much prefer a dedicated ISO dial instead.

Like seriously, enough is enough! Give it a new EVF even if you have to make the body slightly bigger (though I'm sure you don't have too). Keep it tiltable and make it non-16:9.

Adding a bigger, GX8 class EVF to a GX7 makes it a GX8. There's no way around it.

I never said to put in a larger EVF, just a new one. Sure, one that is as good as the one in the GX8 would be great, yet it doesn't have to be as large. Just replace the field sequential EVF unless they have a massively upgraded field sequential EVF (albeit I'll still be doubtful it would be good enough).

Your camera is out there.  It's made by Fuji, many to choose from.
