EOS UTILITY PROBLEM RE: 'PHOTOS' on a 400D

I had the Canon EOS Utility working fine for about four days and today it wouldn't work.

It would boot up okay and recognise the camera but wouldn't download pics. Won't.

The only thing different I can see is this 'photos' thing that pops up. I'm on win10. I think it must be an MS app with win10 maybe? It is just called 'photos' and it wants to import from the camera.

In fact it is doing it now - importing right now it's up to about 250 pics from 636 or so.

So maybe it is what is screwing up the canon utility?

Anyone know anything about this?

The Photos app has a mind of its own to take control of all things photo on your computer and the kindest thing you can do for yourself is remove the app and then check whether you've got a duplicate of all the photos which Photos has made for you.

thanks for that.

I will remove it. It has no manners. Badly behaved. At the moment it is hung reporting it has found 742 items so far in it's search of my eos for new pics ! I've taken maybe 50 this morning at the most.

It has found 742 on the card is what I'd think. Not 742 new. Now that's bad programming right there.

And then to say 'so far' and hang with nothing to do - there's no other cards in the camera for god's sake - is further bad programming.

Now I see it has gone from my taskbar. Perhaps because I pressed 'cancel' on the hung 'search' screen or window. So it has shut down the whole app because I tried to shut down the search because it wouldn't complete. Without offering me an option or notifying.

That's also not good, is it? Looks to me like an incomplete piece of software being beta tested on the unsuspecting public.

So I've tried to uninstall it with the command I found on the web. It completed without any messages so I don't know as yet if it's been successful.

No, it's not. If this is the first time Photos has imported pictures, it doesn't know which ones you imported with another program already.

Photos is not new, it's been around since the beginning of Win10 and is not "beta".

Removing it is fine, but all you really needed to do is disable it from "importing" photos. Can't remember the exact location in the Windows settings, but I believe it's where yo specify what program runs when you insert removable media.

There's nothing really wrong with Photos, granted I'd never use it, but I supposed it would be fine for some. What likely happened is an update was installed and it changed the default setting to allow Photos to import - now THAT's something to complain about!
