Petition Fuji, give us 4:3, 5:4, and 6:7 aspect ratios on X-series cameras

Dear Fujifilm,

I’m asking you something that should be very easy for you, on behalf of many fellow photographers (we’ll see how many will sign this), which are also known as Your Paying Customers.

Could you please add three aspect ratios to the already possible ones in the X-Series cameras?

At the moment we have the standard 2:3, the very nice 1:1, and the very filmic 16:9.
How about adding a couple of new ones?

Specifically the ones typical of medium format:

  • 4:3
  • 5:4
  • 6x7

The main advantage of mirrorless cameras is the electronic viewfinder.
I shoot raw, so whichever in-camera crop I choose the whole frame is recorded, but the possibility of framing directly in square mode is infinitely better and more precise compared to cropping later, if I know I’m gonna crop it anyway.
Let's boost this feature some more.

The 3:2 aspect ratio is a weird invention by Oskar Barnack: it should have been forgotten for good with the first digital bodies, but unfortunately camera companies insisted on it as the de facto standard for the industry.
But we’re digressing I guess, so let’s get back to the point.

There’s two categories of photographers:

  1. those who prefer the larger and more elegant aspect ratios
  2. those who never tried them

Being able to frame in those formats would be splendid, dear Fujifilm.

Why not add this feature in a future firmware update? Indeed, why not? It would cost next to nothing and make many people happy.

I suggest to include this feature in every single X-Series camera and to update their firmware accordingly.

If that turns out to be much work, well, I understand.
In that case, just do it for the bodies I personally own: X-T3, X100T, X100F.
That’ll be all. Thanks in advance.

I guess better option is to give us ability to define custom aspect ratios

I don't care, and I'm not suggesting this isn't a good idea - but I'm highly skeptical about the "on behalf of many fellow photographers" that you suggest you speak for.   Not that I doubt there's 10 or so that feel the same.

Re: Crop

Agreed. Aside from the metering of only the ‘area’ within the frame lines in the EVF, I really don’t see a need. But, that has been and always will be my ‘use’ case. For the most part, the only real cropping I do is to make sure the image is straight to the horizon - if that’s part of the composition.

Why not go medium format or micro 43? By the way, I’ve tried them all and prefer 2:3.

Minus 1

Sorry Aspirinetm, absolutely not something I'd particularly want and certainly don't need it 'hard-wired' into the camera.

Most of my images - for the last 40 years - are either finished at 4:3 for landscape or its reciprocal for portrait. A few in totally different formats e.g. for panorama or other special purposes. This achieved during postprocessing of course.

See Morris0's post above.

I think additional aspect ratios would be nice, and it can't be all that hard to implement, but really they need to just allow us to hide options in a menu list.

If your not, just go on and enjoy your day.

This does not seem to be the right approach. You will only annoy the people who feel mildly positive about this with your tone

With that, I can only surmise it IS all about your wants only, and wanting to see if there's others that feel the same. Which is fine too, but that's not what you did.  You postured it as if there's a pent up demand, and it just appeared to be a tad dishonest.   I didn't mean to offend, but you DID suggest you were speaking for the likes of myself and many others here.

I hope the poll works out for you - it would be interesting to have you report back with the amount of support the poll garners (especially if it's a significant amount).

The minus 1 refers not to the fact that you posted a petition but to the concept underlying the petition. That I think is abundantly clear in my response.

However, you too, just go on and have a nice day.

Let's lighten it up

Let me suggest that you put away the "tude here and just stay on topic, or better, just ignore the comment. When you post anything here, you can occasionally expect comments that might go beyond the scope of what you were looking for. Learn to ignore them and move on rather than countering with a personal attack. That's just the sort of thing that gets threads locked and people banned.

Re: Petition Fuji, give us 4:3, 5:4, and 6:7 aspect ratios on X-series cameras

This is a feature I really wish Fuji would implement. I've seen it used to good effect on some other cameras that have this option. I can think of quite a few times in the past year that a non-destructive crop mode would have helped me frame an image better. It sure would be nice to press a button and be able to see what elements are being included in my planned crop before I take the image.

The "workarounds" that people suggest are usually either crappy ways to deal with it (seriously, putting tape on your screen?) or suboptimal at best (i.e. cropping in post). There's a clean, simple, elegant solution if Fuji chooses to implement it.

What would you think about a graphical feature that provides various aspect ratios and also framing guidelines, rather than cropping?

For instance: if I want a 5:4 aspect ratio where the framing guidelines are by golden sections instead of the rule of thirds, it would put that on the viewfinder. Or maybe a 2:3 with diagonals.

I was just about to suggest that but you beat me to it. I can't quite remember what camera I had, but it essentially provided a "crop" frame option for common print sizes. So a graphic only option would work fine for me. In fact I would prefer that to an actual crop. I always shoot RAW plus jpeg and like the ability to crop the full frame as desired. I guess with the graphic frame, it would also be possible for fuji to crop the JPEG automatically as it is saved.
