I've spilled mulled wine over my GX7 in 2016. Took it out yesterday and still works like a champ :). But I don't go around claiming that the GX-7 is mulled wine-proof :).

On a more general note, all used cameras come with the risk of a catastrophic breakdown, and the older they are the greater the risk. (unless they are some fully manual camera made back in the days "when iron was iron, plastic was iron, men were men and the sheep were a wee bit afraid")

Hmm, some (one) brand new camera comes to my mind, with an even greater risk of a catastrophic breakdown.....

Maybe I am just lucky, or maybe I just spread the load over more camera bodies.  Despite having a few GM5 camera bodies a GX7, GX85 and GX9 I have not had any rear wheel issues (says he with a hand firmly pressed on wood).

Of the three three GX7-style cameras I own the GX7 is still my favourite to use.  This is despite “improvements made”.  The GX9 suffers from the awkward top plate controls brought about by the fashionable but terminally useless insertion of a manual EV wheel to the detriment of the impeccable ergonomic handling that made the GX7 so very special.

Otherwise the GX9 is an excellent camera (even its evf is quite satisfactory for my purposes ... (grin) ).  Pity that it was also slightly crippled performance-wise in relation to its half sibling the G9.  But I like them both - pity that the G9 also has to suffer a side hinged lcd otherwise it would be best handling in class.

Me too - 2 X OM-D E-M1.1 but just added E-M1.3

but think I'll be keeping the E-M1.1's also...at least until I can get a second E-M1.3 on the cheap.

Re: Six years old and still wanted

The GM5 is a marvel of packaging but the controls are too small for comfort for my hands. If not I would have traded my PM2 for it.

Used the PM2 today on a hike that was no hike because the local park was closed for Covid-19. Not setting the IQ world on fire. Shot these on "P" with approximate focus and the wonderful little 12-32.

Still works for snaps. With RAW beats a cell phone and it's smaller than most cell phones, just thicker even without the lens. Fits in a camera vest pocket though. You can find one for less than $100,

The Em10 mark 1 : sums up everything that is great about Olympus m4/3 . A joy to use, small, sharp, raw files are splendid . Mates well with the small primes, especially the 17 f1.8

Bought a used one in excellent condition for my baby bro last Xmas for 140 euros , less than 10k actuations .

Tried a mark 2 last year but decided it not worth the upgrade for what I do , and the body felt cheaper made .

Any beginner willing to enter m4/3 go for the Em10 , imo still best value in 2020

I am also a big fan of the e-m10. It just suits my needs perfectly. I do use it with the add on grip which makes it very comfortable (highly recommended). I have not seen the mk2 in the flesh so can’t comment on build quality, but, other than the improved evf, it holds no temptation for me. My favourite combination is with the 12-50, which I really like as a general purpose walk round.

Thank you for posting your beautiful pictures. They are all wonderful but your Tuscan pictures reminded me of our visit to this region some time ago, At the time I was not quite so keen on photography as I am now so my pictures of the trip are limited, ah well, just have to go back! Thanks again.

Thanks you Gary

I use em1x and em1II, both very recent cameras but I also still use  2 em10, first version) and the em1 first version on a lot of my shoots. I think the old omd, even the cheapest, are still relevant.

G7: kind of poor man's G80, roughly same form factor, ergonomy and features set, save for the lack of IBIS. Could still be bought in march in my country new with the Lumix 14-140 f3.5-5.6 for only 150/200 € more than the lens alone. My previous first camera before I bought the GX8.

G80 has IBIS, weather sealing, much more silent and shock-free shutter, no AA filter...

I have a G7 and a G80. They are giving away G80's for 350€ right now (from a reputable store; including 24% VAT of course).

I started watching Camera Conspiracies YouTube channel again recently, and there is no video where he does not mention how incredible the G85 (=G80) is...

There are many classic µ4/3 cameras that are worth it, but at those prices, it does not make much sense to buy a second hand G7 for 250€, when you can get a new G80 for €350-€400.

I agree that G80 is a much nicer camera than G7.

I bought the G7 in 2018, bundled with the 14-140, for only 150 € extra over the price of the lens alone. At that time, the G80 was much more expensive.

When I bought my GX8 in 2019, I might as well have chosen the G80.

At that time, the G7the had been my main camera across Tuscany, and I enjoyed both the handling and the output.

Though I mostly used it with the 14-140, I had not met the dreaded shutter shock.

GX8 and G80, with the Lumix 12-60mm, were offered both at roughly the same price during a september 2019 firesale, around 600€ for the bundle. I chose the GX8,  to try the rangefinder ergonomy and the new 20MP sensor. The G80 looked too close to my G7.

That is why I called the G7 the poor man's G80

Re: Older gear in 2020

The MKII may have a higher resolution LCD which would make it easier to check focus. The control dials are much better designed, easier to use. I like the ergonomics much better.

I got a GX8 last summer for €300.

It is the first model with a 20MP sensor, good IBIS, good grip and Fuji-like physical controls. Very nice results I get with it, too!

Peter

It's a great camera.  I don't even think of it as being old.

Try the old Lumix G2 - I also use an Oly EM5.2, and apart from the IS it does nothing in the real world which the G2 cannot do just as well.  a cheap but useful body such as the G2 will leave plenty of change to buy a really good lens, such as the Oly 12-40 f2.8 PRO.

I was looking at some pictures taken with my G2 from way back in 2014. Compared with recent pictures from more modern cameras taken recently they hold up really well.

I still have and use a black EP5 - put the 15mm on it and it's my minimal kit camera.

Love the styling, I much prefer the 'rangefinder' look to the 'slr' look.

I'd love a new version with the innards of the EM5 3, a built in viewfinder and weather proofing.

I like mine. Use it a lot. Good DR, focus peaking for my manual lense, WIFI for my tablet, remote shooting for my phone. They solved the shutter shock with the firmware update. I still use my E-P3 and my EPL1, they do OK in better light...and I like the colors from 'em. A good solid feel to them all.

PEN version of EM5.3, like a rangefinder style would be cool.

But with the build of the EP5 and PEN-F .. in fact a PEN-F2 would be a great platform for a quality build for the em5-3s innards

That would be GREAT!  (Assuming it would have no articulating screen, of course.)  😁

Common, let's be serious. Nobody will see the difference between a picture you took with a recent camera and a camera they is, let's say 8 years old.

I sometimes notice that my processing software has become better and/ or that by re- processing my raw files again they are better because I got better at processing my raw files, but that's, in most cases, the only difference.

World class digital photos that were taken 10 years ago don't become suddenly obsolete because there is a new camera.
