With the crazy good new D610 “close out” deal right now, was curious to know if anyone has any feedback on their experiences in using this body with the most recent Nikon 58 1.4 (a lens I have been interested in, for a while).

Mostly interested particularly in your experience autofocus accuracy and the potential need to use AFMA with the older system in the D610.

Thanks in advance! Hope everyone is sane and healthy.

Yes, it is a killer deal. If you need a full frame this is a great buy. Grab this deal and let us know your thoughts. BTW, I have a D610 but not that lens.

I wasn’t happy with the focus accuracy of the af points on the D600, nor D810, at least when away from the centre point. The D850 is the only camera I have been able to consistently and accurately focus the 58 1.4. But the extreme outer af points of the D850 are more accurate than the centre af point of the D810 so that’s no surprise.

Just to qualify the above I do shoot a moving target so if your shooting still targets or even portraits where the person is capable of holding still you should be fine.

What kind of prices are the D610's going for now? Vendor? I've been looking at used, but in this case new would be great

Just under $900 with the 50mm 1.8 thrown in at BH right now.

Thanks for your input! It would be for weddings/portraits most of the time, so quick movement wouldn’t really be a concern.

I use the 58 with a D750 and am very happy with it. You might consider the D750 as well, it has some advantages on the D610 and they may or may not be meaningful to you. If you weren't considering the 58, the the D610/50mm combo is tough price to beat, and the 50 is a very nice lens in its own right. But since you're interested in the 58, exploring body-only pricing might be worthwhile.

Personally, the D750 is the best Nikon body I've used, the ergonomics/grip are spot on for me. The AF system is superior to D610. And the tilting screen is handy. There are other features the D750 has that the D610 does not that you can explore to see if they matter to you. Since it is likely you'll have this camera for a time, choosing one that you're comfortable with and has the features you enjoy is important in my opinion. If you're willing to spend on the 58, then perhaps consider similar mindset on the body. Just my two cents. I can say I really like the D750 a lot, but what works for me doesn't mean that applies to anyone else.

The 58 has a learning curve, but is a really nice lens. I had to spend time with AF Fine-tune, but once I got that accomplished it's worked like a dream. I really like this lens, it is uniquely Nikon, and the images it produces can be quite beautiful. If you're into sharpness, it may not be the lens for you, that would likely be a Sigma Art. But it's plenty sharp for me, and the rendering of out of focus areas is beautiful (to my eyes anyway).

My guess is that with the advent of the D780 there will be some good pricing available on the D750. (only a guess though). The D610 deal is really good too, only you can decide which is best for the kind of photography you want to do.

Really appreciate all this info! My wife has two D750’s, and I agree.. wonderful bodies. They have served us very well. Cash is pretty tight right now though, and I’m looking to find the cheapest full frame option to get dual card slots, since my Canons do not have that (6D & 6D II).

Was thinking that the 610 would be a great replacement for my 7 year old 6D. With the ultimate goal, when we are allowed to work again, to sell the included 50 and get the 58.

Edit to add...

I know the 58 isn’t an MTF champion. However, to me, it has a special rendering. I simply love the look it gives.

Could not agree more regarding the 58mm.

The price on the D610 package is amazing, and I noticed it comes with a battery grip as well. I think the 50mm is perfect match, but I'm a 50mm guy, so others might disagree. I'd still recommend a careful comparison between the D610 and D750 features, just to be sure you'll be happy with it. Honestly, both cameras are capable of beautiful images, no doubt.
