Canon EOS M100 - GPS tagging

Hello

I want to geotag my photos taken with M100.

I downloaded the Canon Camera Connect app to my Android phone and enable logging location information. When I got back home I connected to the camera through Wifi and tap the "Send location information" button. However I get a message "This function cannot be used with the currently connected camera."

Any suggestions?

I could be wrong, but I think the problem is -- no gps in the M100 to geo-tag the photos. I have the M100 and never found that in the camera!

Joe do you have to manually enter the gps co-ordinates?

No, it gets geotagged when you take the pictures (at least my M50's do). The old way (like the M5's) was to record where you went on the phone and then geotag when you got home. The new way is to geotag as you are shooting.

Alan: I'll have to look for that, but the M100 may not have geo-tagging. The M50 is an upgraded camera!

The geotagging is done by the cellphone.

I must also say that the Canon app is clumsy. I had to struggle with it to get it to work reliably. BTW, the 'Send location information '  option does not work. As far as I know, you can ignore it. I either set the app to Auto Transfer, or initiate a transfer from the camera by picking the 'Send images to smartphone' option.

I geotag using Canon Connect with the M50.  The Canon Connect app was unreliable with an earlier Android phone but after switching to an iPhone, I have experienced very few problems.  Since I haven't used the M100 I don't know how well it works with the Canon Connect app, so can't comment.

By far my most pleasant geotagging experience has been with a 6D that has GPS built in.  As reported by others the battery does take a bit of a hit but I've still been able to shoot an entire day on one battery.

Canon app which is supposed to do the job is basically unusable.

Will try this

Hi Panos

That's an interesting app.

However, I don't  understand what you meant by saying the Canon app is unusable. As I said it before, I had to struggle quite a bit to get it to work with my Moto cellphone, my tablet and my old LG cellphone. Of course I don't  know how the app behaves on different  cellphone  brands. All I can say is that the Canon app is far from being consistently reliable and user friendly.

I use Geo Tracker for Android, I save the log file as GPX and use Exiftool in my computer to tag all my raw files.

Put Exiftool and the raw files in the same folder, open the Terminal or CMD and run: exiftool -geotag "*gpx" *CR2

The Canon app worked OK for me on my OnePlus 5  (and supported both my M50's at the same time). My issue was my phone's GPS which would occasionally report that I was about a mile away from where I was before going back to be correct.

Since my walking app does the same, I know it's not the Canon app at fault.

Alan

[I've just ordered a OnePlus 8 and will see if that fixes the issue]

If I'm understanding what I'm reading, the M100 doesn't interface with Camera Connect ... if that's the case then third party software is the solution

I've tested (i.e. played with) GPS logging software that adds the EXIF info after downloading the photos to computer.  I didn't particularly like the "inconvenience" of this method compared with the GPS info recorded at the same time the image was recorded.  My preferred method is using the 6D with built in GPS - it just works.  Camera Connect seemed to be more "camera disconnect" when I had a Moto Android - when I updated to an iPhone 8 the problems disappeared and I've had only positive experiences using the M50 & Camera Connect with the iPhone 8.  FWIW, I rarely use GPS except for travel photos where remembering the location is more important.

M100 does have the function to Geotag photos using GPS information from a smart phone via Bluetooth.

I was not aware of this until now, after reading this thread. I have confirmed that it works with the Canon Connect app running on Android. It works well.

I am happy with this as I have the camera for almost 2 years and I thought it didn't support this.
